This movie is a heartwarming story that had me internally cheering for the child prodigy's success up until the pressure seems to wear him out. The change that takes place in the boy through his struggle to face his fears is compelling and inspiring. It is more than a movie about chess, though I love chess. This movie can be seen by any parent as a parallel adventure in their child's aspirations, such as swimming; and it can be viewed by children who may see that winning really is not what competing is all about. Pomeranc is sensational; he leads us along as his character develops into a young man who recognizes the consequences of his decisions. Kingsley does well in characterizing a washed up, but realistic chess teacher, though Pandolfini, whom he portrays is not at all washed up. Mantegna grows as a dad who slowly begins to understand how beautiful a talent his son has, and learns to let go of his own personal ambitions. And Fishburne brings a flavour to the screen that makes this film much more entertaining that it would have been had his character been omitted or altered. I love this movie, and I highly recommend it for a family viewing.

YOu know, after seeing this almost 14 year old movie, I expected it to be outdated but it isn't. With an all star cast including Lawrence Fishburn and Ben Kingsley, its hard to go wrong. Even smaller roles in the movie are played by the likes of Laura Linney. Well the young boy was a prodigy there is no doubt about that. But I think what makes this movie so special isn't necessarily the tale of the young chess master, but the lesson it tries to convey. Never loose your soul, honesty, integrity, decency as a human being in the pursuit of greatness. I admire Joshua for the choices he has made and love this movie for the message it conveys. That is also not to underestimate the value of Max Pomeranc as an actor. From displaying great humility and fragility as an individual as a young kid is not an easy thing to do and he does that very well and naturally on this film.
