This movie was a totally pleasant surprise. I expected it to be more of a documentary and it turned out to be an amazing film. Jonathan Rhys Meyers was brilliant!! Don't miss this film -- especially if you were/are a fan of Pearl S. Buck's novels. Mind you, this was based on a true story.

Sort of a dated style of film that seemed to kill off one character in particular twice no less-so that affected how I felt about this film. I liked Chow Yun Fats other films but this one is a bit dim witted for him I think.

This is a mediocre movie. I liked the cinematography and the story about the history of China at that time. Acting was mediocre. The movie seems slow and to drag on in some places. I could have waited for the video release. Certainly not a must see.

This was an interesting story with great visuals. But unfortunately it has some of the worst, corny, most predictable dialogue – had me rolling my eyes! Some of the acting is not the best as well. Worth seeing if you like history/war movies.

Great acting, a real insight into what life was like in China during that time period. Ray & Alice.

Many characters and situations were improbable. Most main roles were unconvincing. The good side was the originality of the theme. Movies about sino-japanese war are rare. Also, one must acknowledge the quality of the picture, other technical aspects, and the challenge of making that type of movie. This film is worth seeing because of its historical interest. But it is not a masterpiece, especially given the great potential of its subject.

This is a very good movie. A great story based on history, well acted, appropriately prsented, excting and heartfelt. Comes across as both a realistic protrayal of a dark period in world history and a touching foray into the lives and hearts of a number of interesting characters. I am surprised this film is only playing in a single theatre - I suspect it would appeal to a large audience. Highly recommended.
