Baghead [2008] Movie Reviews on CinemaClock

The moment I saw the trailer for Baghead I knew I had to watch this film. It got some really positive feedback from its showing at Sundance and so I went to go see it at the advanced screening for the JFL Festival. Watching Baghead you will most definitely have a unique perspective the horror genre. To be honest it did have it's moments of humour, spookiness and spooky humour but what was most frustrating was that you could see how much potential this premise had and yet it never lived up to those expectations. The dialogue was very much adlibbed and so the pace was uneven. I agree that it did give a more real life sort of feel but in real life people are funnier than they were in this movie. Maybe casting & talent played a role in that. Greta Gerwig seemed to be drunk in every scene and I suspect this project was an attempt for her to break out of the usual porn roles she used to be working on. Let me state for the record that if she has an intellectual disability I apologize for making fun of it. I think that a bit more editing could have been done to make the dialogue a little tighter. That being said it is as close to being a realistic horror film as you can get before you are simply ripping off Blair Witch and relying on gimmicky, shaky cam footage. I rate this film overall 6/10 but relative its genre you would give it a 8.3/10. I do like that fact that the writers are parodying themselves and their peers. Actors, bad or stupid ones, get on everyone’s nerves so it is fun to see them get terrorized in the woods. The first scene with Jett Garner is a disclaimer that denies any claim to the artsy, pretentious attitude that many people in the industry tend to cling to. Ironically I think that the only good reviews for this film will come from the artsy, pretentious, bad or stupid actors.
