I found it to be a really good historical piece - with some really good acting and writing. What bothered me was the fact that it did not open the world of racism and discrimination into its connections with so many other forms of discrimination still alive and well today. The audience was clapping and cheering at the end because slavery was abolished - which is a good thing - but there was no real tie in to current problems. It's EASY to feel good about the abolition of slavery. What about LGBTT rights? Gender equity? This movie had a chance to open up to TODAY's issues and make us think and I am truly disappointed that it didn't. If we don't learn from our historical mistakes what's the point of rehashing it?
