The movie spans a few decades in under 2 hours and a half, so there was no time for much development in characters or historical details. The directorial decision was to have a series of scenes, that are supposed to be strong. The succession of these scenes is clumsy and, IMO, does NOT work. There is simply no dramatic structure whatsoever. Some scenes could have worked, but you just don't feel you were led into them. It's like having a cue card "CRY, THIS IS SAD", but you do not feel compelled to do so. The tone felt... Condescending. As if the audience was a child. I hated the narration in Mangal Pandey for the same reasons. I'd like to think Akshaye did a good job... But... I'm afraid I didn't enjoy him in at all this movie. You're supposed to feel for his character, but the movie worked the wrong way for me, I did NOT feel for him at all. Who would even like that character, seriously!?! There is nothing in his actions that makes him likable. He is truly portrayed as a good for nothing, end of story. I think the major flaws with this movie are the awkward editing and the general condescending tone. Add that to the pretentious expectations they were setting for the hungry audience, and you can't help but feel cheated and insulted.

This is one of the best movies ever made in India. There are lot of spoken and unspoken messages, that came out through the impeccable cinematography and superior quality acting of each and every character... It's not to show how unsuccessful Gandhi was to grow up his son, but to show how unfortunate both he and his son were. Gandhi always wanted to teach Harilal the greater aspects of life that Harilal was not capable of receiving. A movie based on a historical event cannot be more interesting and touching than this...

It was so bad that everyone that went to watch it left in just the few minutes it started because the movie was so stupid.

I was pretty disappointed. I felt that Akshay's role was undermined. I felt that his character was not developed enough; thus making it difficult for the audience to really connect with him. Too much emphasis was made on the relationship between him and his father, rather than the internal war waging within him.

Perhaps it is my western sensibilities but I found what was a good and tragic story to be told in such a way that it was at times hard to understand. The various elements of the story seemed disconnected to me, and therefore hard to follow. However that being said, I found the movie to be visually great and very interesting to watch, with some good acting and would recommend this film to anyone interested in expanding their cinématic horizons.
