What this film gains with its glorious acting and moderately amusing story it utterly destroys with its merciless slaughter of any twinge of pleasure one may have been able to garner through its watching. A film about desire should not leave its audience so devoid of a taste of the very thing it tries so hard to glorify. Near every shot teases so hard that it fails to be a tease at all, but rather takes pleasure in its own viciousness and austerity. Be warned. This film is made by a priest, and not a lover.

No movie with Rush is ever bad - he just doesn't do bad films. This one's involving, witty, interesting & a little naughty... to see a man this obsessed with writing to the point of going to the extremes that the Marquis de Sade did, is nothing less than fascinating. What a creative, unusual & different film - great performances by all.

This was certainly one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, which says a lot about its quality. Hats off to the director and the writers especially. The script was absolutely genius; Shakespeare-worthy. The acting was brilliant on the part of Geoffrey Rush and the other actors as well. This movie really makes you think about the human condition and mankind's obsession with sex.

It was a great movie, and Joaquin Phoenix was the best! This movie is funny, but sad too.

Qu'ill, simple as it implies about a tale of a devastated writer, Marquis who being loved for his erotical and intellectual telling and being hated for revealing the truth of who we really are. It's woven beautifully yet tradgically without emphasizing the physical bodies (like other XXX movies), this movie incredibly successful in bringing sexual passions and inexplicable heat to the audience. It is an excellent drama!!!

I've watched Quills two times now, and I still can't get enough. It helps that I am a dedicated Geoffrey Rush fan, but the film itself is artistically beautiful, and cleverly woven. I tire so quickly of easily conquered love and romantic drivel, so this was a refreshing perspective. A tragedy even Shakespeare could be proud of. Rush's performance is electric on-screen, bringing forth a charisma and energy woefully lacking in today's actors. He brims of enthusiasm, and he can honestly be viewed as one of today's best character actors. Kate Winslet lights up the audience with her winsome qualities, her charming smile and innocent demeanor. Praise be with Joaquin Phoenix as the angsty, tormented Abbé and Jane Menelaus as the submissive yet independant Marquise René-Pélagie. I didn't care much for Micheal Cain, as his performance was somewhat wooden and un-characteristic of his usual creativity. All in all, however, this is simply a literary orgasm for those who enjoy a good periodic piece.

Ohmygod!!! Best film I have ever seen. Rush's performance as the Marquis was superb and Winslet as the young laundress was equally as good. However hats off to Joaquin Phoenix as the priest who runs the asylum. I have always thought that he was good but his performance was top notch and I hope to see him in more films in the futre!!! A must see!!

Quills weaves drama, pathos, and dark humour into a colourful and intriguing tapestry well worth seeing. Phoenix - the tormented abbé - and the ironies of Caine's life are outstanding. Winslet conveyed much more depth than I thought she was capable of (after the Titanic disaster), and Rush was, as always, superb and subtle. Highly recommended to everyone who would like to see love, hate, intrigue, sadness, and brilliance blended into a portrait of the true nature of humanity. Quills deserves the highest awards.

This is an exceptional movie. I would say this is the best of all the movies I have seen. There is nothing like this movie since 2 years. I think this movie deserves at least 2 Oscar nominees. Recommended to be seen.

I am eagerly awaiting for a modern movie on the French Revolution and Louis XIV - so I was very impressed with the opening scene to "Quills". This movie was wonderful... from the start to finish it proved that a classic motion picture can be made in the year 2001. Drama, Action, Comedy, Passion - are all aspects of this breathtaking movie! Go see it.

If you never know "le divine marquise" you will after. It is totally different than your teacher ever told you about De Sade.

Walked in knowing very little and came out quite educated on the marquis. Deeply enjoyed this flick until the end where it became sort of silly. Otherwise a very good well screened film.

I saw Sade at the Toronto Film Festival - another version of Quills. Quills by far is the better movie. Sade was too explicit, but Quills is explicitly adequate. Thought the plot deviated from history, but nevertheless not a bad story. Excellent acting.

Seeing that this movie is the result of an american production, I must say I was quite impressed. The acting was great and the decor worthy of many prizes. In spite of the scenes which will undoubtibly haunt some and make others sleeples due to nightmers, the end is in a way a little bit "hollywoodian" although perhaps with a touch of witt. By far the best movie I've seen this year. More deserving than say Titanic, without a doubt but not the best movie I have seen, though one I appreciate and shall remember for a long time to come. 8,5

Insightful? No! Great plot? No! Great acting? Yes? Worth the money? No! This movie lacks substance. Any movie without substance is a movie strictly for entertainment. This movie lacked both. Of course not all movies are suppose to be inspiring--this movie is certainly one of them!

Excellent movie! Not for the very sensitive, but the scenes are there for a reason. Very interesting and begs the question on how far do you have to go to censor someone... (Of course, back then the king could do what he very well pleased).
