AMU is not for people who don't appreciate serious movies. If you want to watch AMU, you need to be a Cinema lover and a great critic. If you are light hearted and avoid discussing serious issues, please don't watch AMU. AMU shows the Indian life style, the political propaganda and the attitude of Indian youth towards West. The movie has been directed in an awesome way. It touches your heart. But again, you have to understand Indian Culture a little bit in order to understand the movie. It is not a Hollywood crap. Rather a masterpiece or a documentary of 1984 riot, which started after the assassination of the former Prime Minster of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. A must watch.

The movie dragged on and on... Yawn. Serious subject matter poorly directed... The acting was amateurish.

I went to see this movie and walked out after the first 15 minutes. I guess that should disqualify me from rating it, but I just had to share my impression. The acting is wooden and amateurish and the characters all a little too cute to be believable. I went to see it largely because of the glowing reviews it received here. Based on what I saw, there is something suspicious about the 9's and 10's this film has received.

Amu is a stunning film that both documents a buried tragedy and tells a compelling story. It's the whole package, very well done.

This movie is not good. It's too bad. It's story could have been very interesting. The director seems not to have known how to direct it. It lasts only 1h40min. Yet it felt like 3h. The acting is dreadful. Laughable in fact. Avoid that movie.

Amu has an informal, comfortable, home-movie feel, but in a good way. It creates the sense that you're actually with the characters, witnessing the events as they're occurring. It also lowers your guard, calmly taking its time to let the story unfold, so when the climactic scenes finally arrive, they pack all the more of a wallop. While always maintaining the personal perspectives of the individual characters, the film powerfully reveals the largely forgotten atrocity of the massacre of thousands of Sikhs in India in 1984. In its own quiet way, it makes a courageous political statement, unflinchingly laying blame for the genocide squarely on the shoulders of the government and police in power at the time. With subtlety and small details, the film conveys its outrage that those responsible have never been brought to justice. The importance of telling this story should not be underestimated. As history has shown, those who learn that the perpetrators of mass murder have gotten away with it in the past may try to repeat a similar crime in the future. Shonali Bose's feature film debut holds the promise of a bold and exciting new talent.

The movie was excellent. The topic of religious riots has been been filmed with a fresh approach which brings important issues to the forefront. The actors were truly great and the subject of the movie is relevant today. The film raises important political questions about the state of Indian affairs. I think the story of the 1984 riots is an important story to be told because as the producer implies that India still had the raw ingredients for any religious riots to happen again. These riots could happen with any other group. The reference at the end of the movie to the Gujrat riots in 2002 was subtle yet powerful. If you are looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Amu is it.

A history that's been suppressed for far too long. Politically organized pogroms still take place in India (the last major incident being Godhra in 2002), and this film bears witness to the horror of it. If you want to see other films like it, find "Parzania" as well, about the Godhra riots in Gujarat. It's been banned by the fascist Modi government in Gujarat, because they don't want their people to see the truth of the horrors they unleashed.

A wonderful movie. Seldom does one see a succinct portrayal of such a sensitive topic without the topic hijacking the movie itself and still getting the message through to the audience. India has to get the ghosts out of its closets if it wants to be a responsible nation in this every shrinking world. The cast has done a wonderful job too. Many of the scenes are typical e.g. when Amu and her mother are buying jewelery at a shop, the director leaves it just when the message has been delivered and does not elongate it more than required. As Khushwant Singh has said "This movie is a MUST", go see it.

This is a beautiful movie which really touched me. I guess because I first saw it on St. Valentines Day, which is a day for love and lovers but instead I saw the reality of life. The hate that man can have for his fellow brother. Yes I learnt that in 1985, along with the death of Ghandi there was 10, 000 people killed. Where was I and why did it not mark my life like the 5, 000 people killed in the twin towers. Why is there so much killing? This movie answers the question obout those who did not die and had to cope with the death of a love one. It is a sad and beautiful movie which everyone must see. We must question ourselves as to why there wasn't more fuss made about these senseless killings of innocent people. There is far too much killing in this world it will bring us to another world war which will be the end of man kind!
