Yes it was a little slowish, but a movie that's worth seeing when you have the time to.

-You call that Boxing? This movie doesn't show any good boxing fights.

Meg Ryan and Omar Epps were fantastic, and Charles Dutton was sublime as an old grizzled trainer. This movie is about boxing, the sport not the hype, and although the movie is all about hype, the story resonates as real and poetic. The characters have there parts in the great hierarchy of life, the father, the mother, and the prodigal son who returns to triumph over the foe of the parents. This movie combines all the essential elements of modern mythology, sport, family, evil, and the corruption of the good. It is, in finality, less about reality, than about abstact truth.

I found this movie an enjoyable way to spend an evening. If you are looking for entertainment... Meg does a great job. I haven't often seen her in roles that I liked... here she does a really good job. Good movie, worth seeing.

Well, as a boxer myself, I was a little skepticale of this movie. But naturally I did go to see it. Many things have been embelished, but it is again a movie. I like Meg Ryan's role in the film, I think this is one of her best roles in a movie, yet I think it could have been better. I myself also have a female trainer/manager, so to get a little insight on the obsticle's was very enriching. Good movie, but not the best boxing movie.

This movie is simply a distraction. It's self contained - a street brawler is turned into a boxing champion with the help of a Manager and a Trainer. In this movie the twist is provided by Meg Ryan as as a fictionalized version of Jackie Kallen, who once managed Thomas Hearns and James Toney. Meg Ryan is a female Manager in a male dominated environment. That's all there is to the movie.
