Wow this was an incredible movie so to speak. Did not expect much from the title but right from the start it got you wanting more. Honestly you will not regret seeing it.

The Coen Brother's movies are hit and miss from movie to movie and from person to person. This movie was a huge hit for my person. I am a big fan of random comedy that manages to be clever at the same time. I found the subtle references to the Odyssey to be very entertaining. The music is really good, but has since worn off on me over the years, which is why I don't rate it a full 10. This deserves an oscar far more than No Country for Old Men.

I loved this movie. I thought it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I watched it with my Mom and Dad. It is melting pot with adventure, crime, humor and drama (with a little bit of music mixed in which might I say was fantastic) I loved the fact that the trio had many "unexpected" adventures along the way of trying to escape from the prison. I enjoyed the part where they pretended to be a part of the Klu-Klux- Klan but actually ended up making a fool of themselves. The humor was also there when they thought the guy turned into a toad! It was also funny when Everett had went through all that trouble to find the weeding ring for his wife and it ended up being the wrong ring after he had went through almost being hanged and a giant flood. I didn't like Cooley who kept trying to put them back in prison. But then thats just my opinion probably because I liked the trio better than him... I also thought the soundtrack was very good. I think this is a fabulous movie. Loved It! 10/10.

This movie was an excellent satire of The Odysey, it was a funny movie that I never thought I;d like. The soundtrack is great, especially Big Rock Candy Mountain. Good performance by George Clooney, I don;t usually like his stuff. The whole kkk thing was a bit creepy and reminded me of my hatred and love of the south mixed together. A truly enjoyable movie that you;re able to watch more than once.

I am staggered that someone should base a modern film on Homer's The Oddessy. That alone gets it points. The hero's journey, Always, goes first to the pit of hell, then as far as you can go, and then you come home a changed person (for the better?). The prophecy by the elderly, unnamed black man on the hand car on the tracks, is something Homer could have written if he wanted if he lived in the southren South. That scene alone convinced me, there's good stuff to come. The little references to Homer, McGill's first name, Ulysses, the cyclops, the Sirens, the men being turned into animals (toad, by mistake), are nice nods to Homer. The journey home in disguise, with the big daddy beards, the interrupting the strange suitor's pursuit of Ulysses'wife struck like an arrow. The excellence of Ulysses on stage with his pards to win her back in front of all comers is so wonderful. The first Ulysses performs an impossible archery shot while in disguise. The Coens would be hard put to make this story bad. They made lots of good choices. The nidpicking wife at the end is a nod to Matthew Arnold's poem about the dissatisfied, aging, itchy to get going again hero, after he's been home a while. Gonna be soon time for another walkabout.

It's a comedic journey through the American south of an earlier, harder time. By using the ancient storyline of Homer's Odyssey as a guideline (not as gospel) the Cohen brothers traced the journey of man whose ego (extreme hubris) brings the wrath of the god's down upon him. Before he can reunite with his loved ones he must realize the errors of his arrogance and learn humility. The Cohen Brothers have taken this moral life lesson and couched it within a humorous storyline and transcendent musical soundtrack. A bit more cerebral than most can comprehend, but most will enjoy the humor and honest music. A must see.

I wish I knew more of Homer's Oddyssey to catch all the subtelties of this film, but I didn't have too many problems though. An excellent movie. I love the subtle humor. George Clooney actually does a decent job in this one. John Turturro hasn't disappointed me yet. And personally, I think John Goodman is a fine actor, especially in films.

The Coen Brothers are weird. If you take this as a known going into the movie, it will certainly help you know what to expect. That is, expect the unexpected. O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a tale about three escaped convicts who are racing against time to get to a treasure. On the way, they encounter all sorts of colourful characters and do all sorts of interesting things. It is loosely based on The Odyssey, but since I've never actually read The Odyssey it would be difficult for me to draw parallels. Parodies of everyone from Robert Johnson to the Carter Family show up at some point. There are hillbilly rednecks, a political election, a blind prophet, religious fanatics, some hooded KKK members, and a bunch of pyromaniacs with a penchant for killing. Somehow in this hodgepodge, a plot (and I use the term loosely) gets strung together. However, this movie isn't about the plot, nor is it about the acting, even despite George Clooney's golden globe award. Each time his accent slipped I questioned how well he deserved that one. But none of that was the point. The bottom line is, this movie is very, very funny. Of course, being able to pick out some of the references helps. I admit that I probably missed most of them, since many were very obscure, but there was still enough humour in there to entertain almost anyone. Just don't go into the movie expecting something typical, because O Brother, Where Art Thou? is anything but.

This is perhaps the Coen brother's best film (with the possible exception of Miller's crossing.) The film is fast paced and epic in proportions. The most important aspect of the film is its soul. This is reflected in the faces of the gritty characters and the folk music they produce.

To most movie-goers, George Clooney is known as a fine actor able to portray a wide variety of dramatic roles, such as in The Great Storm. However, his comedic acting abilities are a revelation in O Brother, Where Are Thou? His sense of timing, facial expressions and physical pratfalls surely rank with the best of comedic actors today - without the need to strain for an effect or be so obvious in either timing or result. The real crime of this movie is that George was never nominated for an Oscar! And the supporting actors all add their own blend of outrageous acting, local mood and cultural reflections, with each one offering a piece of the dramatic or comedic puzzle to make everything work so smoothly - and funny. And if that's not enough, there's the great "old timey" music track throughout the movie, highlighted by the Soggy Bottom Boys' - led by George and his three co-stars - rendition of a song lamenting the life of a sorrowful man. Don't get side-tracked by Hollywood's mute praise - just ask anyone who has seen this movie - anyone - and each one will singularly recommend highly this movie to one and all. Some have seen it many times, and still yearn for it. And the soundtrack CD is a welcome addition to anyhone's unique music collection. O Brother - Where's Thy Sequel?

This movie is exceptionally good! Both my wife and I were delighted with its charming plot, its message of hope and optimism and its infectious and subtle humor. The characters have an attractive mix of old time simplicity and timeless wisdom. There is action. There is redemption. There is fun. The music is a connected and tuneful distillation of the times. I have seen this movie 13 times since Jan 12th. Not since The Sting have I been so enamoured with a film (so, OK, George Clooney is no small part of my infatuation! ) that I simply could not wait until the video release to see it again! Forget the 'based on Homer' disclaimer: the connections are tenuous at best, but the story elements are all there -- appealing, and not-so-appealing characters; romance; tribulations; connecting symbolism; humour; moral lessons -- set against some of the most captivating cinematography I have seen in ages! There are some killer one-liners that I've already seen featured in folk's email siggies, and the most compelling after-images of the film, burned into my memory, are those scenes 'dusted' or seemingly airbrushed with a tobacco-gold patina: the cotton-field panoramas, the campfire "whutcha-gonna - do - with-yer-share-o'-the-money? " scene, the 'cross-roads' scene, the bayou shots, the baptismal scene. I am personally offended by any review or reviewer who cannot see the apparent innocent beauty (personified brilliantly by Tim Blake Nelson, an underrated actor/writer/director in his own right), simplicity and virtue of this film. OK, it's not heady, "Faulkner's, Steinbeck's or Cather's 'psychological' south", but you cannot deny that the scenic tableaus -- the scenes where the boys PAUSE to gape at a new wonderment -- express the same profundity of any great literature of its genre. As for the music, needless to say, the soundtrack CD has been in constant rotation on my CD-player, and because the music tracks contained therein is chronological, that is, in the order the songs appeared in the movie, it replicates the movie experience for me, until I can next get to the theatre to see the movie again. And again. And again...

This was the best Coen brothers movie that I have seen, and I think I've seen all of them, Blood Simple, through Miller's Crossing, Fargo, Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy; Any more? The music was absolutely great, and any reviewers above who suggest that the story does not come together at the end are used to simple simple narratives. I mean, how can you not love the water nymph scene, or the beautiful white prayer dance to the water, or the harsh and terrible Ku Klux Klan rally that outed the corruption of the wannabe candidate for office. This film deserves ten fingers up, for daring to be innovative, in style, as well as content, something which the Coen brothers manage to pull off in basically all of their movies, although The Big Lebowski was a little out there, even for The Coen brothers. Clooney was great, as was Torturro, Goodman was there for a brief interlude, but yes, the song by the band was great, what was it called, oh, I think: Constant Sorrow... Peace. Jonathan

This movie is a departure from the usual Hollywood fare... Different, quirky but, by no means, a great flick... Long-winded, self-indulgent, even farcical - I had high expectations from the Coen brothers but they were all too quickly dashed... The film's only redeeming quality would have to be the music... The soundtrack is a revelation!
