Great movie. The child actor who played Bruno was fantastic. One of the best holocaust genre movies I've ever seen. The horror is so unimaginable. All children should see movies like this and Schindler's List in school.

Not a bad movie. Made the person I watched it with think and realize some of this stuff happened, and on the scales that it did. Agree with an earlier reviewer though about the realisim of some of the situations that allowed for story development. Some of these things just never woudl of happened. But an interesting movie that is worth watching.

Great movie! As you see life through a child. Sad that in war it's often the innocent who pay the price.

Excellent. The story was powerful, and the movie kept all our family on the edge of our seats. Our kids gave it a 10. I just hoped for a more ingenuous ending.

The movie was unrealistic. No way could a kid in this camp sit at the fence with a Nazi's kid every day and no way could they have dug their way under the fence. Also at the beginning of the movie the mother says she thought that the place was MILES away... since when was the imperial system used in Germany? And also the big submarine sandwich the kid makes to take to his Friend... that kind of food is only found in the US. In Germany they eat very dark heavy rye breads with cheese and cold cuts, not these white submarine sandwiches. They could have researched the movie better. And one Nazi kid gets killed along with how many Jews? The mother didn't deserve this but I have no sympathy for the arrogant father.

The best movie I have seen in a long time. I sat staring at the credits in a state of horror and couldn't leave the theatre for a while. I cannot understand how it wasn't nominated for an Academy Award. As far as Holocaust movies this year, it was much better than Defiance or The Reader.

This is one rare gem of a movie I've ever seen. A good work of art essentially pushes the boundaries of the spectator, leaving her/him a lot to reflect upon. This movie speaks so well about spontaneous human emotions of love, compassion on the one hand and on the other how nationalist ideologies turn humanity into unimaginable atrocities. There are no victors, every evil in the end comes back to the person who casts it. The scenes are beautifully laid out, nothing is over-done, the two boys' acting is just superb. A very relevant theme for today...

It was pretty good, but I don't really like how it ended because I hate it when the main characters have to die T~T.

The acting was generally good; the content: okay. Unfortunately, this is a disturbing movie; I did not sleep well after watching this movie. Movies well devastating endings like this one, are not on my list of favorites. I find the I get enough "drama" from every day news. Therefore, I rate this lower on account of the ending. The point of the movie, neverthesless, is well taken.

I never wanted to see this movie because I had read the book. Twice. (It is actually a childs book!!!) Once to myself and once to a group of young people for an assignment they were doing at high school... I was outnumbered by the people that I went with. It is exactly the same story as the book. I cried both times that I read the book and. Guess what? I cried again in the film, before anyone else, because I knew what was coming. It is so clever the way it demonstrates the effect of World War Two through the eyes of a child. I lived through this war (WW2) , as a child, and it just serves to emphasize how no-one comes through a war unscathed, no matter what age you are...

Best film I've seen so far this year. I found the English accents somewhat distracting, given the subject matter. Still, it was a riveting story and beautifully shot. The two boys were very good.

Really enjoyed this film. The young german boy is a very talented actor. Again it reminds us of the horrific crimes against humanity. The only down side to this movie like Valkyrie, were the German soldiers with english accents, are there not any German actors who can play these roles or at least British or American actors who can do credible German accents.

I am so glad I went and saw this before it went out of theatres. A truly heartwrenching film with tremendous performances from all involved, especially from the young boy who plays Bruno. I was literally heaving with sobs at the end of the movie, it is that affecting. And I couldn't stop thinking about it for days after. See it now before it leaves theatres! You won't forget the experience. Amazing, AMAZING film.

The movie's only point seems to revolve around making you feel pity for Jewish people who suffered in nazi times. The cause is honorable. But there is no plot whatsoever, the story line does not have any significance nor real historical anchor. The way the plot unfolds in the end is even very unlikely and one cannot suspend his disbelief. The film is absolutely boring all along, you are waiting for something to happen, until in the last 5 minutes something finally does but it makes you feel really bad, but for what? What was the moral, or real point of this specific story? There has been many much greater and more relevant films made about those times. This film is pointless and feels only like cheap propaganda. You come out of the film and you feel horrible, but you don't feel enlightened or that you learned anything new.

Everything about this movie was so authentic, the relationships between the characters, the pacing, the settings, and the costumes. The acting was nuanced and extremely effective as a story with an impact it shouldn't be missed powerful images and ideas.

This is a stunning and compelling film. It gives an accurate reflection of the mindset of of WW2 Germany. The story is both engaging and unpredictable throughout. The subject matter contrasts the innocence of children with the gruesosome realities of concentarion camps and antisemitism. This film should not be missed.

Be forewarned, this is a very disturbing movie. When I went those in attendance left in utter silence and you will know why when you see it. This is not for the faint of heart as the ending is so utterly disturbing and - although the story is not a true one- it is contextualized within real historical events which make the plot even more plausible. This plausibility is what makes the movie even more disturbing.

This compelling story reminds me of the 60's Diana Morgan's book & movie, "Hand in Hand" which catapulted me out of being a rabid catholic in my youth to learn that truth is an agreement between the mind and reality. Unreasoning hate is the evil we feed out children because they do not recognize poison.

Superb. A companion piece to Pan's Labrynth, where children try to make sense of things that don't make sense. The innate moral compass that prevents these young boys from recognizing evil helps us see it even more clearly.

The boy in the striped pijamas' directed and co-written by Marc Herman is a poignant and utterly touching fictional tale which offers a unique perspective of the horrible dark days of the second world war through the eyes of two eight year old boys who's friendship defies any hatred or prejudism! In this inspirational and oscar worthy story, Bruno is the son of a nazi commandant who has been transferred in order to be one of the people in charge of a Jewish concentration camp and lives extremely close to it with his family. Schmuel is a Jewish boy held captive in that same camp! Bruno is very lonely since he is now far from his friends in the city and meeting Schmuel is a breath of fresh air! Schmuel is looking for his missing father within the camp as he thinks that he's still alive! Bruno's mother is sensitive and very much unlike his cold blooded father and is devestated when she discovers that the concentration camp prisoners are actually being systematically put in gaz chambers-a fact that her husband hasn't told her! But nothing compares to the devestation that she experiences towards the trajic ending. I fell in love with this timeless and unforgettable movie that is garanteed to touch your heart and which is so very well directed and has great performances from: Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon, Vera Farmiga, David Thewlis, Amber Beatle, Rupert Friend, Richard Johnson, and Sheila Hancock!

Rarely does a film manage to combine the evil and the beauty of the human soul. In this film, evil derived from bigotry and hatred permeates much of the adult world. On the other hand, a young boy, whether through his innocence or his nature, through a test that he at first fails and then tried to atone for, exemplifies all that should be beautiful in humanity; he does this despite the pressures from those around him, staying true, in the end, to his heart. This is not a documentary, so details of accuracy are irrelevant. This is a story about human nature and how the good in one person should inspire us. The acting by the two boys is superb, especially Shmuel. Powerful story.

The sad thing about this movie is it is on such a limited release in Canada. I was lucky that it was on in a city I was visiting, otherwise we would not have been prepared to drive 3-4 hours just to see a movie. The film is very well made, the cast are wonderful, especially the two boys. The ending is shocking but not at all sentimental, leaving the audience still and quiet. Highly recommended.

The acting in this movie was A++++++. We have to realize of course, it is fiction. Nazis were just too meticulous to have the type of theme we see in this movie. That never would have happened. What was not lost on me was the horror of one as compared to the ambivalent, almost non-caring attitude towards millions.

Like Life is Beautiful this is a Holocaust film that completely defies credibility. Children as young as eight were usually killed upon arrival at a concentration or death camp. As well, it's hard to imagine any lengthy conversation taking place between barbed wire in full view of the guard towers. Nevertheless, perhaps the film and the book upon which will help raise awareness about the Holocaust and the consequences of racism.
