I was not expecting much as I hadn't heard of this movie when we rented it. But it was pretty good! Well acted and unexpectedly interesting. When you hear that it's about journalism and politics, you might think it's going to be boring, but it wasn't! This is a good one to rent when you want a mystery to keep you entertained.

Boring dialogues, lack of real momentom, thin story that could not be masked by good score. My buddy and I fell asleep on the sofa due to boredom. Not recommended in dvd or blue-ray format, Save your money!!!

The actors were strong, the plot is interesting, but why is it so boring for the first half hour?.. and then, did they spend all the budget on the actors? Or could they at least have bought a tripod for ten bucks?.. The camera is always moving like when we make our home movies... It would be a good movie as a rental.

I go to every Russel Crowe movie. This one was a little dissapointing. He's good but only as good as the writing in this movie. Thanks goodness for the slight twist at the end. Otherwise, I got to see my cutie in action with the long locks of hair & that oh so deep voice. Yummy.

Not as good as the previews made it look! Kind of the same old story but redone with newer modern actors. The kind of movie that you could see on TV for free but without the big names.

One of the better political-mystery-thriller-fictions to come along in a while. I was surprised to read in the end credits that it is based on a BBC TV series. Great cast, with mounting suspense that had me alternately on and off the edge of my seat throughout. You expect twists and turns in a story like this, and although there's nothing earth-shatteringly original here, it's a good well-rounded story that doesn't disappoint. I was intrigued by how age seemed to be one of the underlying subtexts in the story. I enjoyed and related to the interaction and occasional knowing looks between the older actors. It seemed to show that no matter how much they might conflict in their interests or priorities, there was a shared connection that comes from many years of crossing paths, working together and shared history. Contrast this with the young budding journalist trying hard to earn her stripes and be taken seriously. Ya, I remember those days too. Interesting to see the dynamic from the other side now, after resenting it in my youth. Maybe it's the ageless hippie in me who also delighted in seeing someone who managed to mature in experience and wisdom without completely growing up.

Slow, lack of plot development and good acting. With this excellent cast of academy award winners - where were the performances? Predictable and lack luster. FYI-Great cameo from Justin Bateman.

Very intriguing, Crowe and Afleck portrayed their characters with ease. Politics, romance, and murder all wrapped into one. The film techniques made the film more intense and I was on the edge of my seat for a majority of the movie.

The casting in this movie was horrible. How could Robin Wright Penn be married to Ben Affleck? Jason Bateman? I kept waiting for the laughs. Who believes that Ben and Russell Crowe were college roommates? Helen Mirren was wasted here, her performance was not believable at all. Her personality type never would have made it to that position. And the clothing? How much more cliche can we get than having a reporter wear a brown corduroy jacket? Nothing original here. At least they didn't give us a love scene between Russell and Rachel McAdams.

Promisiing movie with great cinematography that becomes overly complicated and seems to lose its way as the main character, a journalist, uncovers a murder plot regarding a high ranking official involved with a commitee to uncover wrong doing regarding indie security companies hired to do security work overseas in war zones-almost excellent, the way it ends up is strange-not so satisfying in the final equation as it becomes a case of beat the clock, for a kind of wishy washy ending. I gave it a seven because I couldn't give it a 6.5. Great rapore between characters though...

Fit or fat, Crowe is always mesmerizing to watch. Here's hoping Cal McAffrey is remembered come awards season. It's about time Russell was recognized again. (His failure to be nominated for Cinderella Man was scandalous on the part of the Academy)

Excellent movie. Well worth seeing. Strong cast, a story filled with twists and turns, really gets you thinking. Thumbs up for Rachel McAdams, she did great alongside such big names as Crowe, Affleck and Mirren.

Certainly a great movie, if only for this well thought plot that manages to keep you in the dark until the very end. I usually see them coming - not the case here; what you think you understand changes so many times. Not much special FX, but an excellent serious and entertaining film. I loved even Ben Affleck's acting, but mostly Helen Mirren's (always) and Russel Crowe. Really not boring unless you don't have a good attention span or hate politics, in which case, there are other films. Really good suspense!

Reasonably entertaining, but nothing special. Started strong, but the storyline got progressively more convoluted and progressively weaker as the movie continued on. The so-called surprise ending, which should have had you on the edge of your seat, was basically anticlimactic. By the time they got to the finish, I'd already had enough and was ready to go home. Big cast, with average performances. Worth seeing, but you could just as easily wait for it to come out on video.

In the classic style of "All the President's Men", this film entertains with steady suspense - but no explosions or CGI. If you can't sit through a serious movie without F/X, this is not for you. Still here? The hand-held cam is a little too jerky at times; the acting is decent, if otherwise undistinguished; and we keep seeing helicopters with no explanation. Other questions are also left to the viewer to sort out. If you need to be spoon fed, you won't love this. Still here? The rating says it all: good (not great) movie, worth seeing.

Very entertaining, though a bit slow. The big ensemble cast was the best aspect, and all lived up to their roles. And I'm now tempted to watch more of Helen Mirren's work.

I couldn't wait for this to end. None of the characters were properly developed, and I couldn't care less what happened to any of them. It was like a very poor remake of Michael Clayton, or the defective child movie of The Pelican Brief and Oceans Thirteen. If you enjoy smart movies that make sense and have interesting characters, you will hate this. If you like cardboard cutouts following this script : corrupt government/corporation/individual is exposed by flawed antihero while flawed antihero is put into jeopardy and attractive sidekick watches/participates eventually after two ponderous hours everyone gets what they deserve and antihero learns a lesson... well this movie is for you.

The title of this move gives absolutely no hint as to the subject or plot or theme of what unfolds. A few minutes after the opening scenes you begin to suspect that there is more happening than meets the eye. As it begins to slowly unfold it grabs you. About half way through you suspect the ending so it's not really a huge surprise. Afflek is not quite as convicning as Russel Crowe in their roles. This is a far better choice for entertainment than the movie titled "Crank" which was a total waste of time and money. An 8 vs a -2.

A very competent suspense thriller with a nice twist at the end. Its rare to see a movie that doesn't telegraph the ending, and just for that I'd rate it a 7. Add in some good casting choices, very good performances (even Ben Affleck isn't bad), and you have a first-rate movie. Well worth seeing.

Keeps your interest to a certain level, but has many flat parts that in retrospect make the movie even more boring. There are unnecessary characters and/or situations. The twists are semi-predictable. I got excited at one point at the end because it seemed like a very intriguing twist was coming and that fell flat on its face too. Very cheesy ending. The one good thing - certain scenes of stalking and hide-and-seek were quite horrifying marking at least some exciting parts of the movie. Wait for DVD.

I really was expecting more. They could have through in a car chase at least. Or even some heavy gun battle. Crowe wasn't bad though. Gained a few pounds though. Not a Gladiator no more. Not even 1 sex scene. I thought it was going to be like "Bourne Identity", which I loved. Even the book was intense. So maybe look at another movie.

The acting is banal at best. Russel Crowe adds nothing new to the character of the gruff but accomplished rogue reporter. Helen Miren spends her time anguishing over what has become another movie cliche: the new owners who care more about profits then reporting. And, Ben Affleck? Well, let's just leave that walking, talking pillar of salt alone. Pitched as a political thriller, the politics are minimal and the thrills are less so. There is as much drama in this movie as a below average episode of "Law and Order", and much less originality.

The movie started out great and continued at the same rate. The only reason I gave this movie a 7 instead of an 8 or possible 9 is that the ending had no punch. Tha acting was good. It won't win any oscars but still an enjoyable movie.

Before my husband and I saw this movie we read the comments below... sounded worth it... well someone here rated it a 6 and didnt like it. I think they were being generous. We both wanted to walk out. Horrible story-line, boring to the point of wanting to fall asleep... I won't go into details for those of you who will go see it. I'll rate it a 2, Russell Crowe is a good actor, just happens to be in a lousy movie. If you want to waste your money check it out but I wish we had gone to see "EARTH" instead.

Russell Crowe's acting is very good. Very real. Unfortunately, Ben Affleck did not act that well. I did not expect the twist in the end... did not think Stephen could be cruel with all of his justice. But he's a politician after all. His career is his priority.

The usual clap trap of political conspiracies, sex scandals and murder. Much of the movie is pointless as it fizzles out. I understand the attempt to switch focus to new leads and twists, however it comes up a bit short. The acting is good no complaints over all enjoyed it but not a great dramatic exercise.
