The best movie I have ever seen! So friggen funny I couldn't even breathe for laughing!! I just fell in love with the ENTIRE cast! And Tom Cruise - My lord. Jack Black was drop dead friggen hilarious! I laugh everytime I think of him being tied to a tree so as not to raid the camp of cocain. Seriously - I'm seeing it again! Its great! Beware, though, of an opening scene that almost had me walking out - the movie picks back up! That first thing is DISGUSTING! But the rest is gold.

Best movie I've seen since The Muppets Take Manhattan. If you enjoy peeling figs, than this is the movie for you. Some nice Coconut Joe sweatshirts make a cameo in this movie. 10 out of 10. I'd give it more but the calculator built-into my digital watch only has 2-Digits! Well Done!

After having a pretty long and tiring weekend, I sat down with a buddy at the local cineplex to catch Ben Stiller’s latest directing effort, Tropic Thunder. I was a bit weary about whether I’d be able to enjoy the film as much, given how exhausted I was, but the opening minutes quelled those fears outright. It’s funny, I thought, looking around the theatre, as most of the people around me didn’t seem to be laughing as hard as I was at the opening sequence of faux trailers. As I wondered why that was, it was evident that most of the people in the theatre were fairly young. The fake ads and trailers seemed to fly right over their heads, maybe because most of the satire was aimed at the type of things they might watch and enjoy. There’s Alpa Chino’s (Brandon T. Jackson) hilariously crude “Bust-a-nut” advertisement – a hardcore gangster rapper promoting his latest soft drink. That’s followed up with trailers for upcoming films from Tropic Thunder’s main stars Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), and Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr) Tugg Speedman’s latest movie pokes fun at the endless barrage of pointless, lacklustre sequels, that moviegoers have been forced to endure over the past few years. Although I couldn’t pinpoint whether that trailer was aimed at a particular movie star, Fatties – the latest film from Jeff Portnoy seemed to take direct jabs at Eddie Murphy’s prosthetics-laden films. It’s all hilarious, especially Kirk Lazarus’ (Robert Downey Jr.) new film, Satan’s Alley, but I won’t spoil it for you, just go see the film. Tropic Thunder plays as a satirical barb towards Hollywood’s rich and famous, taking jabs at everyone and leaving no stone unturned. Stiller goes after staunch method actors (Robert Downey Jr’s Kirk Lazarus faintly mirrors the likes of a one Russell Crowe), the out-of control superstars strewn on excess, and the overly controlling, “get what I want at all costs” studio execs trolling Hollywood. Even the rappers-turned-actors movement gets jabs thrown at it, with Alpa Chino trying to break into the movie business with his first role in a major blockbuster. Rarely do you ever see a film from Hollywood taking such chances, poking fun at itself while being so politically incorrect. One of the single most interesting and simultaneously frustrating things about Tropic Thunder is that it might be too smart for its own good. In other words, people are going to misinterpret its satire as lewd and offensive towards minorities and the disabled. More on that later. Fresh off Scorcher VI, an unexpected dud at the box office, Tugg Speedman joins Hollywood’s biggest stars to shoot an ensemble war film called Tropic Thunder. Dealing with what he calls an impossible bunch to work with, director Damien Cockburn enlists the help of the man whose memoirs inspired the film, Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte), who suggests that the overpaid actors be placed deep in the heart of the jungle to dispense of their egos and petty squabbles. Cockburn agrees, and the shoot moves to a remote part of the island, but things go awry when the actors come across a real drug cartel and are forced to use their acting skills to save themselves. Although I expected that Tropic Thunder would be my favorite comedy of this year, it actually misses the mark by a bit. Not because it’s no good. On the contrary, Ben Stiller has returned to form, and is back to doing what he does best, much like in his last directorial effort, Zoolander. Not only has he turned down his Ben Stiller schtick that everyone’s a tad bit tired of, he lets his colleagues really shine in this flick. In my mind, the best thing about the film is Robert Downey Jr. as Sgt Osirus. In his makeup, Downey Jr. is a completely different man, and hilariously so. I kept wishing we could have a whole movie based just on the exploits of Kirk Lazarus’ newest character. The fact is, you need to see this film just for Robert Downey Jr, if not for anything else, as he really steals the show. Tom Cruise was touted as a scene stealer in this film as well, dishing out expletives at a rate I couldn’t even keep up with, as the slimeball studio exec, Les Grossman. His cameo is great, and he does a mean impersonation of a completely over-the-top character, but it becomes a little too loud and obnoxious amidst everything else going on. Come to think of it, in some parts of the film, not much is going on really, and that’s another problem. Scenes drag, and it feels like there are some filler portions throughout, that are in place as a bridge, until the next big plot point unravels. It’s alright though, since Stiller, Downey and Black deliver some heavy laughs at opportune times. There’s a scene where Portnoy (Jack Black) asks his squad not to release him from a tree he’s tied to, regardless of what he might say. Suffering from withdrawal symptoms, Portnoy eventually begs to be released, and the resulting banter is absolutely hilarious. There are plenty of moments like this, and it harkens back to the days when Stiller and company were unequivocally hilarious. It’s this return to form that makes Tropic Thunder such a tantalizing exercise to sit through. There are no apologies here, nor is there any holding back. It’s rated R for strong language, and thank goodness for that. People are going to mistake its comedy as politically incorrect and completely inappropriate, but that would mean they’re missing the point. Robert Downey Jr’s Osirus is an assault on the vanity of actors who go above and beyond to portray their characters. The same applies to Stiller’s Simple Jack, where he plays a mentally handicapped person in a bid to win an Academy Award. The joke is that sometimes Hollywood completely misses the point about what a good film should be, and even moreso about how it goes about portraying the subject matter in the process. It’s this wholesale selling short of both themselves and the audience that’s largely on display, to great effect. Not some cheap derogatory jab at disabled people or minorities. Hopefully most will understand this, and sadly, Tropic Thunder hasn’t performed quite as well as industry types have hoped. Perhaps it’s due to a minor backlash due to the aforementioned misunderstanding, but then again, Zoolander didn’t do well at the box office either (and now it’s considered somewhat of a comedy classic) Tropic Thunder is not the best comedy of the year, but it certainly makes a case for itself as one of the most controversial ones of the past decade.[...]

We were very very very disappointed with this film. We've heard critics say it was the funniest movie of the year... NOT. The first hour is torture... Pure torture!!! I kept looking at my watch which I never do. The only two good things were Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. I'm not usually a fan of Cruise but I must say that man can act. Robert Downey Jr. was excellent too.

This movie was Great!!! I've read the reviews before watching this movie and they weren't that great but I didn't care since I liked the previews. Lots of funny scenes with tons of cameos of great actors like Toby M. Beginning was a bit slow but quickly picks up and ends ok. Ben, Jack, and jr were all great especially Robert jr on his role. I recommend this movie and will buy this on Blueray DVD for sure!

Disappointing. I expected better from Ben Stiller, Robert Downy Jr., and Jack Black. It did have its entertaining moments, but it just didn't live up to the trailer.

Wow, I'm stunned by the low rating most are giving this movie. When my boyfriend and I went (and we're in our 40s) the entire audience laughed throughout the entire movie, including us. Man, if you can't see the humor in this spoof, I don't think much is going to make you laugh. My favorite was the baby toss at the end of the movie. Come on, Ben Stiller is brilliant.

You don't realize just how good this movie is until you leave the theatre. It's not hilarious by any stretch of the imagination, but funny/clever. Being an Aussie I loved the references to Crocodile Dundee, and an Aussie being changed to play a negro. Loved the sound track too.

A typical Ben Stiller movie. Corny, boring and typical like Ben. Wanted a comedy, funniest part was the first 5 minutes of it.

The story is certainly a little dull and full of clichés, but the movie is worth seeing if only for the fantastic acting of actors trying to play actors playing well actors played badly. I think that requires uncommon sensitivity. There are few laugh-out-loud moments, the humour is mostly Hollywood-centric.

This comedy actually had a story! Amazing! The ending made sense and all loose ends were tied... unlike 99% of comedies. All actors were at their best, especially Downey. A must see for comedy lovers.

I Honestly thought people would rate this movie better. I thought it was hilarious and couldn't possibly have had a better cast. The comedy was great and the characters worked off of each other perfectly. Also I was surprisingly happy with the performance by Tom Cruise in this movie.

I laughed through the whole thing. It exists in relation to action movies as "Scream" does to slasher movies- it follows all the conventions of its genre, but with an ironic wink, and hilarious overstatement.

Hey to all of you people that actually even bothered writing something here (like u have nothing better to do and your like sitting infront of the computer trying killing time) ANYWAYS THIS MOVIE WAS HILARIOUS, more like a SNL show though. Watch out for the part when ben Stiller is forced to play the retarded kid infront of the village mafia. Btw, my opinion is the only one that counts. Jako would rather watch Pineapple express though. Xoxoxo solatina.

Omg, I was in Mexico when I saw this movie, and even the Mexicans got the jokes! And they dont even speak english!!! Great acting all around, love the cast, and amazing laughs! Abosilutely hilarious!!! Amazing movie... I love Jack Black, and yeah, amazing movie... Totally deserves an oscar... very very... (how do I put this)," satyrical" on what Hollywood dynamics and real-life are like. The people who dont like it shouldn't even spend their time trying to critique it... if they hate it so much, why do they even "waste more of their (evidentally) valuable time" trying to influence others against this amazing movie. Clearly a bunch of losers with nothing better to do.

One of the best comedies I've seen in years. I'd give it higher but it seems sinful to not leave the nines and tens for something more profound. This is great.

Groundbreaking comedy that not all are meant to like, because it pokes fun of mainstream thinkers without them knowing it. Remarkable acting from Downey, inventive and fun. I'd like to know what people who didn't like this film rate as an excellent comedy.

I expected a better story line from the previews. The cast is amazing and Tom Cruise is hilarious. I found it very funny yet some parts were a little too discriminatory. If you like the actors go watch the movie they make it worth it. It's all true about the first hour being long.

Umm, well... hmmm. I enjoyed the movie. I thought Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. were very good. I'm not a Ben Stiller fan and this movie didn't change my mind. Still, it had some funny moments and there were a lot of subtle puns and humour directed towards the actors themselves and the movie industry in general. Worth seeing and somewhat deeper than it appears at first glance. It is the sort of movie that probably has to be watched a few times to appreciate it.

Went to see Tropic Thunder because we wanted to see a comedy. Wrong!! Once or twice a "small" chuckle, but not the comedy I thought it was going to be. I actually fell asleep during the movie for a few minutes. Acting is so so, plot is non existant, save your money, go see something else.
