I simply hated it! I still can't figure out what point the director was trying to make. Was he justifying corruption or glorifying it? Abhishek's effort was commendable. Mani Ratnam let us all down. While Abhishek Bacchan's effort at synthesizing with the role, at varying age groups was truly notable. If only the director had given his role more depth! What a waste.

GURU is a biopic and as with biopics, you do not have a lot of leeway as a story teller. So then you concentrate on how you tell the story that life has already told. And it is in this angle that Mani Ratnam wins. He manages to grab your attention and keep it there for the 2 hours and 45 minutes, with some stunning visuals, great music, good acting and crisp dialogues. I am glad that they are distributing this movie all over canada, Way to go India!

I would say the movie was ok. I agree with one of the reviewer that Abishek was just ok nothing special about the role. At some points you really feel that the role of Guru actually lacked depth, like the scene with his bro-in-law. I thought Guru didn't express anything to him or to Ash either.. makes you feel the so-intense Guru has just become hollow and I feel the character (Guru) didn't speak out when it mattered the most. Even the role of his friend from Turkey was also not convincing. Guru is always shown to be ambitiuos and cut-throat business man but there isn't enough justification or events that support his character. He is always shown to be succeeding.. but how.. is not shown very well. The finale was a total let down making mockery of the law. All said, I still feel it was a great effort but I feel the outcome missed few key details & things.

I think the film is a big let down. And one wonders how come it is getting such misleading reviews. Abhishek is ok... but nothing earth shattering in such a author backed role. The film is slow and very boring at timeszzz... ash is her usual beautiful and plastic. With a budget like that anyway it had to look good. I will give it a thumbs down specially because it is so falsely hyped.

What an inspirational movie that master mani has made yet again. The award wining performance by abhi will always be remembered by many people. He has now become an accomplished actor with this film, I would not be surprised from now on that he will exceed his fathers achievements in the coming years. Wait to go abhi!!!

Good movie, AB junior did a good Job with the beauty queen. I think the movie would have been better if it was during Amitabh Bachan's and Jaya Bachan's time and the couple act in it. Amitabh would rock and jaya would sizzle. Nevertheless AR Rehman proved again he is the best music director and co-stars were excellent, Mani Ratnam did a fantastic Job. Movie worth watching.

Superb acting byh Abhishek Bachchan, well he shouldn't be called little B anymore, he should be called Big B, and big B should be called giant B. Very good story and truly deserves a 10. But not as good as rang de basanti.

Ive read all the comments, everybody is commenting on Abhishek and Aishwariya or Mani Ratnam but the best thing in this movie is definitely the MAESTRO A R RAHMAN. Nobody can create music like him. A R RAHMAN is the best. Un comparable to anyone in the world. He can take you beyond your limits of imagination..

Ratnam consistently gets it right. Yes, there are flaws in Guru, but when is anything ever PERFECT? Compare this to the miserable film of Yashraj of late. I, for one, would rather shoot myself rather than having to sit through Fanaa or Dhoom 2 again. But Guru is the type of flick that makes you want to return to enjoy what you missed the first time. The affection between Guru and his wife, the breathtaking cinematography, a back in full form Mithun-da, and a finally maturing Abhishek. Star children often take forever to develop into decent actors, but if/when they do, they are quite a revelation. AB Jr will never beat Amitabh though. Had Mani been around in Aby Baby's hey day and made Guru with him, this would be a classic. And with Jaya opposite him, this would have been one of the best movies globally of all time. But I digress. If you want to enjoy three hours in the cinema hall, go see Guru. You'll thank me for it. For non-Tamil speakers such as myself, watching Ratnam's other filmi endeavours leaves you wondering why all the fakers of Bollywood don't take a lesson from him..

Not bad, but I have seen many better mani ratnam films, this one tends to be a little boring towards the end. Otherwise its ok overall, simple, straight forward plot, not twists or turns, no suspense, not much drama, very regular.

Wonderful film. This movie echoes Sr. Ambani's journey from being a poor villager to being the top industrialist of India. It is an inspiring story, beautifully told, and the film really moves into the "great" category thanks to Mani Ratnam's brilliant direction and Abhishek Bachchan's awesome acting. Guru is a clean entertainer, a great movie to watch with your entire family. Watch this movie and be inspired.

I really enjoyed the movie, but got the feeling that the subtitling was weak compared to other Bollywood films I've seen. Too bad, because some of the subtler plot details must have been lost. Still, it was pretty, moving and full of good-looking actors and actresses. No complaints!

Guru is outstanding! There is NO debate here. Guru is what Bollywood ought to be! The story is phenomenal. The performances are Excellent. In-fact, the chemistry between Abhishek & Aishwarya is wonderful. Mani Ratnam is a well rounded director, writer (we've always known this) However, if there were doubts, he's proved his critics wrong through Guru. Guru is well paced. If you think the story is slow, then you need to go back to your everyday Bollywood flick. This is an intelligent narrative. It's intense in a subtle way. This is not a "Boy Meets Girl" love story. It goes beyond that. It reaches into your human side, in other words, it exudes realism. Fantasy lovers: Stay away! Recently, Bollywood has stepped up (in many ways) to Hollywood. Films such as Dor, Mr. & Mrs. Iyer, Page 3, My Wife's Murder, Laagan have all proven that the world's number one film nation is finally at a point where one can be proud. However, no review is complete without speaking of a films negative side. With Guru, there are a few. There are some lose ends. In-fact, when the story takes a twist in the 1st half, I was left wondering why. At this point there needed to be better character development. Mani TELL US why character "A" turned against character "B". Obviously from the films standpoint, there is a reason. However, it's not strong enough to set up everything that's about to unfold for the balance of the movie. The actor who plays the brother-in-law, is very young. He does not compliment the picture. Nor does he work well with Abhishek's Guru. In later moments, we see the brother-in-law look the same, as Guru ages. Since the story spans a few decades, it would have been realistic to show Aishwarya age along with Guru. She looks pretty much the same although has just a speck of grey towards the end. I bet most audiences don't even notice. Now some may say my comments are nitpicky. They might be. But perfection is paramount. Imagine if you're reading a novel, wouldn't you want it to touch you in an intellectual manner? That's all I ask of any film, Bollywood or Hollywood. The most glaring error I believe was with Vidya Balan and Madhavan's characters. Although they did a good job, I never understood where these characters fit into the story line. If you were to take these two out, the film wouldn't suffer one bit. To be honest, it would cut down on the length of the picture, or could have given the movie makers more opportunities to "fine tune" most of the lose ends. Having said all this, let me summarize. Guru is a brilliant film. If you like top notch performances, you'll love Abhishek. If you like something that's not the usual Indian mainstream cinema, you'll love Guru. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the music. It's superb. A. R. Raiman reminds us once again why he is what he is within Bollywood. Go see Guru, you won't be disappointed. Boy Meets Girl lovers, stay away![...]

WOW!! An excellent movie I have been a fan of Abhishek's from the beginning but this movie he really out does himself, he now can be compared to his father and for all the critics Abhishek has proved that he is his fathers son. The movie was superb! You are constantly on your toes, waiting to see what happens next. The movie is complimented by Aishwariya, and Mithun and I'm not a huge fan of either but they did a splendid job. Congratulations to the director, amazing movie, and great cast selection. A must see for all!!

If not for the story, watch it for Abhishek and Ash. Abhishek's performance was outstanding - I dont see any other actor topping that performance this year. As opposed to Dhoom, Ash wear sarees through all of Guru and she looks simple yet beautiful. Cute always wins over sexy! Mithun finally comes back in a great role and gives a distinguished performance. Good story, but a few loose ends. Nobody is sure what the point of the Madhavan-Vidya Balan love story was. Still worth a watch!

One of the best movie come out in recent times from bollywood. The director keeps you involved throughout... Abishek did a great job interlacing the role of serious businessman and a jovial family man perfectly... Ash was at her best... Madhavan and Vidya were wasted in this movie... songs were okie with 2 songs really pleasing... Overall it's a complete movie and a must see... Maniratnam didnt disappoint at all.

'Guru' is quintessential vintage Mani Ratnam at his best. AR Rehman finds his creative touch with some of the most melodic tunes to-date, the Mia-Mia song hits melodic sublime rarely seen in a bollywoood flick. Abhishek finally comes out of larger than life shandows of big B, Ash conjures earthly screen magic. But in the end it's Mani Ratnam's masterpiece that features one of the most captivating first half for a bollywood flick in years, rustic and alluring country side depiction, fast paced screenplay and songs penned by maestro Gulzar!
