DVD: "The Princess Bride"
At first glance, this flick is a charming romantic comedy adventure, but there are so many layers to peel back, where do I begin? Cary Elwes is a gorgeous and extremely talented actor with perfect comic timing. Robin Wright, her best role to date. Billy Crystal rules. Peter Cook, Mel Smith, Chris Sarandon, Peter Falk, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn - it's a dream cast, with the crowning touch - Christopher Guest (Sir, now). If they had changed even the smallest thing, gone for the obvious, no, it wouldn't have worked, but Goldman and Reiner wouldn't do that, they went for the gusto. They have created a work of art that can be enjoyed time and again, as all good masterpieces should be. As you wish.
