Like the music, the plot, the acting was great but the movie ran a little bit too long.

Hey everyone. I know this movie came out five years ago, but I just saw it last night! It really dissapoints me that people say it is 'too long, boring, no plot, etc.' This movie is a masterpeice. It has an underlying meaning that not the average person can truly understand, most obviously. The overall goal of the movie, I beleive, is not to boast entertainment, to see how much blood is lost, to see your favourite actor- no! The story took you through the eyes of the main character, who starts off innocent enough, but with his gaining momentum of wanting wealth and importance, starts taking drastic steps to acheive it. It's truly excellent because you do not think Matt Damon is Good or Bad. You're confused at the end... did you like him, or hate him? For once, Hollywood has made a film where the 'bad guy' is actually human, and he feels and hurts, too... no matter how disturbed he is.

Interesting plot, and I loved the characters. I just didn't buy everybody befriending Damon's title character. Tom Ripley came across as charismatic as a wet spongue, I don't understand why a jet setting (ok, this was pre-jet set, but rich and snobby) couple should take him into their home. Story was intriguing though.

I Loved it! I think it has a deeper meaning than most people can see but I see it! It's a great movie, a little boring but the good parts make up for it!

Matt Damon did the impossible... He scared me. He shed his good boy persona, and made a thrilling performance.

A heartbreaking story about one man's desperate attempts to fit in and failing miserably. Watch it as a character study with thriller aspects, not for the serial killer movie it was advertised as, and you'll love it.

I'd have to say that I have mixed emotions on the movie. It was beautifully done and I would suggest to anyone who has not seen it that they do, right away. I loved it and at the same time found it very disturbing, because of the memories of my past which it brought up. I would say that it is a wonderful case study on psychopaths as well as extreme narcissistic personalities. I think it was really about what happens when you lose sight of who you really are: what happens then? -I loved the depth of the character's and overall I thought it was very well done.

One of the best movies I've seen in 1999. The actors are awesome : Matt Damon, Jede Law, Gwyenih Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, together with the other actors, they offered us an outstanding piece of art, with the diverse personnalities they played. The whole film is excellently made & the story is captivating, intriguing & very scenic. A must see!

Very good acting in this otherwise very dismal film. Not worth the rental. Themes were underdeveloped and not well thought-out. Plot had little direction, except to show the continual erosion of the main character. Film ends, rather than concludes. One is left wondering why there are always some people that give any film high praise.

My husband and I do not get a chance to get out much. With two kids and a full time career in town it makes it hard. When we do get a chance we like to indulge in dinner and a movie. This past weekend we got the chance to see "The Talented Mr Ripley". I loved this movie. The only dissapointment that I had was that I didn't get the chance to read the book first. I always like to do that if the book is available, so that I might get inside the characters head. I would have loved being inside Mr. Ripleys head! The intense acting in this movie was so great that I felt a deep sympathy for the characters even after the movie had finished. Mr. Ripley in general. I give this movie an A+, and would highly recommend seeing it more than once!

A great suspense/thriller/drama which ravelled me with such great sceneries from Rome, San Marino, Venice and what I beleive would be Capri. Matt Damon is great and emphasizes how far people can go to get a friend, life, persona. It picks at the imagination of the viewer to be weary of the people they meet. Or maybe it is describing how society makes a person act the way they do. The result Mr. Ripley...

Anthony Manghela brings again his genius perception of movie making to the splendour of the big screen. Surpisingly, the xtra-ordinaire performance of Matt Damon in this movie was gronded by the critics because his role was quite non-convensional. The music of the motion picture, composed by Gabriel Yared, is an absolute classic and worth adding to your CD collection.

Mysterious film with an erie outlook at the life of Matt Damon. I don't usually pay attention to the cimeatography in movies but it jumps out at you in this film. Worth seeing but may be considered long at times by some. 7/10

I don't get the other comments. Go see an intelligent movie and people complain that there's not enough action; go see an action movie people complain that it wasn't "philosophical enough dude". Give me a break!! This movie is awesome and a welcome change from all the crap that's playing right now. Not recommended for people whose idea of a good time is watching Universal Soldier. If you want to be pleasantly surprised go see this movie. It might even enrich and lead you to a little thinking.

I was amazed to see the adverse reactions of some people to this movie. Not enough action, too long, too predictable, blah blah blah... doesn't anyone have any imagination anymore? What about attention span?? I thought this movie was very multi-layered. The setting: a psychological boxing ring. This kind of movie demands a lot of energy and focus from an actor. Matt Damon, Jude Law and Cate Blanchett gave wonderful performances. Gwyneth was a bit pretentious and perhaps a bit melodramatic in places but that might have been an imitation of the "formula acting" from the 50's which seemed to suit her role. In context with the time period, I thought that the too-good-to-be-true look to the whole thing seemed to enrich the mood. I loved the soundtrack too! The jazz iconoclasts were a bit much though. Anyway, I had a great time and I hope that anyone who sees this film will enjoy it. Movies are fun, people! We seem to take them too seriously nowadays. :)

This movie, based on author Patricia Highsmith's first book of a series on "Tom Ripley", is a welcome change from the everyday action packed Holywood flicks we are so used to seeing. Intrigue, Questions, Confusion, are all part of the plot. An enjoyable film, but don't bother if you must have an action packed Hollywood flick to please you.

A captivating journey from America to the beautiful Mediterranean. The movie follows Matt Damon on an adventure through love, murder and money. Matt shines in this role with equally brilliant performances by Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. Additional performances by Cate Blanchett and "This Life" star Jack Davenport make this a must see!!!

A well crafted movie that holds your attention. Good ending that held our attention and prompted discussion and speculation afterwards. But the movie did not pass my litmus test of still being in my thoughts the next morning. Perhaps it's the spoiled rich kids and their vacuous lives/deaths. Nevertheless, an enjoyable flick that is worth seeing.

Now this is my kind of movie. The principal character is all ambiguity and confusion. Is he straight? Is he gay? Is he good? Is he bad? His lack of self is writ large and the audience is taken along with him in his tragic spiral. He's certainly far from the psychopath that a lot of people here label him, and I can understand those people who want their characters to wear large good-guy / bad-guy labels around their necks being left in confusion. I salute Damon for going against type here and risking his All-American image. I felt he lacked the emotional presence to carry off Ripley's inner turmoil to full effect, but there was enough there to draw you in. Minghella does it again.

Great Movie! Great acting, scenery and story line. I didn't feel the movie is long at all because after half way through the movie, it gets so interesting (if you're paying attention) that time flies.

Everyone and everything is beautiful in this movie, except the dated homophobic sub-plot. We aren't in the fifties anymore and nobody wants to see a film that reinforces false and negative stereotypes of gays as manipulative psychopaths. Welcome to the millenium, Hollywood, and grow up.

This movie is brilliant, both in the actors performances and its masterful script. The score is outstanding, as is the cinematography. I suspect those who gave it a low mark were expecting somekind of Matt Damon vehicle and hoped he would be cute and adorable and were disappointed by this dark, often disturbing story. This is not for teenagers. This is an adult movie, with adult themes given an adult treatment. And that may be the best thing about it.

Great thriller where most of the real action takes place inside the characters, not outside of them. Not for the 4-color-palette-brain kind of person who only recognize the colors red, blue, green, and yellow.
