Wow this is pretty good for a graphic novel based movie Frank Miller works more of the magic that made his Sin City such a success and on top of that Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes, and Scarlett Johansson to top that off. The action, comedy, and plot are fantastic sure The Dark Knight was better but this is a close second. Excellent movie recommend seeing it.

This movie is very entertaining if you take it all as a big ironic joke, but if you want a serious, dark movie, dont go.

Let's just say this is no sin city, and if your a fan of these types of movies like me, you probably will be disapointed... and for the life of me I just could not connect with the lead actor he was just... blahhh... they should have saved Eva Mendes for sin city sequal she was too hot for this movie... !

Ok I almost missed this movie because of all the bad comments here but I did go and see it you know what don't go and expect to see sin city or 300 if you want a light funny and very diffrent super hero movie then by all means go see it and all the really hot women is always a plus good movie in my mind.

It was somewhat of a disappointment. An over all weak movie lacking the flash, flare and excitement that 300 and Sin City had.

When another movie was sold out the person at the theater recommend The Spirit, my 3 girls and I could only watch 15 mins. I would have to put this movie near the bottom of all the movies I have seen.

This is one of the few movies I walked out on - I tried, I stayed for more than half and was sorely disappointed. I was a big fan of Miller's Sin City and 300, but this was nothing like them, although it tried. Terrible. Really, really terrible.

Wow this was a really bad movie... I mean the previews made it seem like it would be more action but it was really bad. The one liners were terrible. The acting was real the worst I have scene since the happening. And to all the die hard Frank Miller fans come on [...]

From hearing bad reviews on rotton tomatoes I had low expectations for this movie but suprizingly it was good the storyline was good the acting was great and over all it was a campy an fun movie experience. Although I should have guessed critis would be wrong the did call sin city a good movie which I disagreed with.

I didn't get it. It might of been better if I wasn't expecting so much out of the movie. The previews led me in a different direction. I wouldn't recommend this movie. Like many of the previous reviews said, the cast was great... but that's about it!!

This movie was awesome! If you love 40's nostalgia, go see this. If you appreciate the old comic books and wish they made more of them into movies, go see this movie. Samuel L. Jackson is brilliant as The Octopus, as well as Scarlett Johansson as his sidekick. If your in the mood for a fun - spiderman - meets - 40's cool, this one is for you.

One of, if not the worst movie I've ever seen. The previews are incredibly decieving, making it look like another decent Miller film. All it did was take elements from his movies and turn them to garbage. Horrible acting, horrible writing, no plot, no action. If you liked Sin City then DO NOT see this movie. Seeing the amazing elements of SS being exploited and ruined in this movie actually made me like SS a little less. Just don't see this movie. Ever.

Was a little disappointed. The movie looked amazing, like watching a comic book come to life, just like Sin City. The problem is that it was a comic book with a very thin plot. All eye candy and not much else. But what eye candy.

Horrific. Considering the other pretty good movies Miller made, you have to wonder if he was just fooling around on this movie. Absolutely zero plot. Entertaining bits of action here and there, but it has no original plot and no building suspense or momentum -even comic books have a sense of building up the drama. It's like Miller held a film class and assigned students into groups to bring together a very mediocre effort with some big bucks. Sorry Miller, but if you're planning a sequel, I won't even watch it on a cable rerun... a FEW good performances and a FEW ok effects, but NO PLOT = no respect for the paying audience. Just like Quantum of Solace in my opinion where the movie went overboard on way-off poorly conceived creativity and devoid of a smart and intelligent storyline.

Yes don't believe the people giving 1/10... this film is indeed a period piece, and if you love Sin City, or Frank Miller's works in general you will LOVE this film. The world of the Spirit is depicted in the classic Frank Miller palette of whites, blacks and reds. (Those primal colors that attract the most attention! If you don't believe me, look at rock music... The Hives use them, The White Stripes as well) The occasional sepia tones will creep in as well. The film is stylish, campy, at times funny, and alludes to the 40s but has a few anachronisms as well (cell phones and computers help place this flick in an unknown time and an unknown place) It is really a comic book come to life. If you are not well versed in the traditions of comics and the Golden Age of comics as a genre, you may be a bit disappointed. Last night one couple walked out of the film after 30 minutes... but you know, this isn't the X-Men, or The Dark Knight, but another universe which has similarities to other superhero pics but also enough differences to make The Spirit an enjoyable, gritty and exciting ride, depicting the adventures of Central City's guardian.

What a fantastic movie! Such a nod to old PI/50's comic books. It was silly and cheesy and brilliant! People who saw this movie and hated it obviously had no idea what they were getting themselves into, and then didn't bother to look for the nuggets of gold in it. I loved it! Fantastically fun and clever.

My only previous introduction to the Will Eisner character "The Spirit" was seeing a couple of pages a serialized cartoon in a retrospective collection. I thought it had disappeared. But a bit intrigued by the concept, I thought than if this character ever came along in a film or book I'd go check it out. So I was prepared for the somewhat dark aspect (he lives in a graveyard), the bad jokes, etc. The film-maker attempted to capture the feeling of the original while introducing cultural elements not seen in 1940s cartoons, e.g. technology not yet invented. Did that work? I'm not sure. Also, according to my taste, the schlocky aspect was a bit overdone, but then I have not actually read a complete Will Eisner graphic novel so I don't know whether the director was true to the source or overdoing it. Hence, my somewhat uncertain rating. I might give it a 6 but the production values were quite high. I felt that the actor playing the lead character was very good. He deserves to get recognition for his work herein, and a further stellar career! So going to the film was worthwhile to be introduced to him. People not familiar with the original cartoon should look up an example of "The Spirit" and weigh their reaction to the graphic novel before deciding to go to the theatre. That would be a better way to make the decision on whether to see this movie that reading comments from reviewers who are so highly polarized (giving either lowest or highest ratings just as emotional reactions and not explained) It's worth seeing once for the cultural experience. However, it's not one I'd watch repeatedly. I hope this actor turns up in something more mainstream, though, and I'll watch that again!

I wish there was a negative rating I could give this bomb. I lasted 20 minutes before I walked out. Half of the 20 poor souls who were fellow victims left before I did. I should have stayed home with the dog. The experience was pathaetic.

This is the worst piece of garbage I have ever seen!! You will find the cheesiest, most ridiculous scenes and dialogues of your life, and I thought Bollywood was ridiculous!! Miller what were you thinking? Did you think you could do a better without Robert Rodriguez? I had to torture myself and watch it 'till the end only because I was driving other people who intelligently chose to see another movie. I want to sue Frank Miller and whichever hollywood company allowed this retard to make this joke of a movie. I feel embarrassed for Samuel Jackson. Samuel: you made enough money man, you don't need to do this!!!

This is a great film worth seeing. I don't see why most people are complaining. Miller did great work with and from the source work. In Miller's own word "I didn't f*** it up". Anyone complaining should go back and look at the source material that Miller stayed true too! Understand that this is not Miller's personal work but the work of his teacher Will Eisner. On a personal note I loved the inside comic book jokes i.e. Ditko.

For the people that keep saying it's stupid, it's deliberately off-kilter It's a satire! It's Absurdism! It probably requires a little bit of knowledge about the conventions of film noir and the early history of superhero comics. The dialogue is SUPPOSED to be hackneyed. People who think this movie is bad also wouldn't enjoy Samuel Beckett or Eugene Ionesco -- it still doesn't mean they, and this film, isn't brilliant! GO see it for yourself!

After reading all these reviews, I felt I had to go see what all the fuss was about. I was expecting this movie to be a terrible showing, but I loved it! It was full of clever cliches, and for those that say the acting was terrible, I felt it was great. It was exactly how I imagine a live comic book. Excellent.

If I can give this movie a negative score I would give it -5 out of 10. Special effect: very old style and not good. Acting: below average even for known actors. Story: meaningless and feels like a bad kids movie. Entertaining: Not at all. I want my money back. There is nothing new in this movie except for the 2 minute part a of head-on-a-foot which is not funny but Samuel Jackson's reaction to it was funny. In my opinion there are so many good movies out there, don't waste your money or time on this crappy one. Producers complain that 7 out of 10 movies they produce actually lose money. With a movie like Spirit, I am not surprised.

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life! I can understand that it's based on a comic book, but so were a lot of other movies. This movie was not funny, not thrilling, not imaginative, not romantic and very awkward. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON WATCHING THIS MOVIE! I can't stress that enough. One Word. Awful. If I get paid 10 bucks to watch this again, my answer would be an obvious NO. It would just be a waste of my time (I would rather be at work or watch crappy old black and white movies) The worst part about this movie is that it lacks actual humor. You know, they kinda try to act funny... but you'll just be like "uh... we suppose to laugh or what? ". I highly recommend you to remove the existence of this movie in your mind. P. S. I'm not joking! This movie is horrible!

I'm kind of sorry, but I've expected way more from writer Frank Miller. After "300" and "SinCity" which both have been amazing movies, did I had the feeling to see a bunch of crab. In some situations I had the impression to watch a porn stripe. A really sad production of Frank Miller. Sorry - but this isn't a good movie and not comparable to Millers older movies.
