Much better than we had anticipated, but a little slow especially at the beginning.

It was nice although I couldn't understand about Penelope and his engage but I liked the love between she and Cage, I always enjoy his roles and his playings, he is so lovely to be a captain and specially a lover. The film had a nice genre, and good directory.

I loved this movie it was such a good love story I just melted with warmth every time Nick Cage spoke. He looks so good in military outfits sexy baby. He is so good in these dramatic movies he just gives it that special ingredient.

Nick is a babe and did a wonderful job portraying the italian accent! Penelope is also very beautiful and fit the role perfectly!

Nicolas Cage was great as usual, kudos to him, this movie is great to bring your girlfriend (I love you Lisa). I enjoyed it cause it had different genres in the movie and it wasn't boring. Go see it!

Enjoyable, with beautiful scenery. Cage is trying too hard to be joyful & put on an italian accent - sounds very fake. But other than that, it is a pleasant movie. I found J. Hurt's performance to be the best of the cast.

Would have been good if Cage's accent was more credible = like a bad pizza delivery man.

The movie was great. I've read the book (I have to say the book is better, but I enjoy the ending in the movie more) . It's worthwhile seeing. I enjoyed it. I thought the script was well written, and the actors did a nice job. If you don't see the movie, at least read the book.

It couldn't have been possible to get something better with these 2 worst acting people ever: Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz. Well, in a way it was a nice movie but it could have been better with better actors in it :).

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I loved the movie any way, we need such movies, it was a soft tender romantic movie. Cruz was great and Nickolas was good for playing an Italian, but we have to accept his performance for it's a romantic role, you can't expect him to do what he does in his other movies, the story is beautiful, the part about sacrifice is wow.

Fabulous movie. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy Nicholas Cage's awful accent but with the scenery and the music it was quickly forgotten. I actually enjoyed his accent to Penelope Cruz's. Best love story of the summer.

A good movie! Better than the shallow Pearl Harbor earlies this summer. The plot was more interesting with some twists in the middle on who is your friend and who is your enemy. I also like the scenery. Looking at the Island and ocean brought me back to my visit to Greece. And a better love triangle in the middle of the war story, than others earlier this year.

Very good movie though the accents we could have done without (Nick cage"s awfull). The story was pretty much accurate on what sort of things happen at that time as to what my grandparents tell me when I compare the story to their stories during WWII. Awesome scenery.

First of all Captain Corelli's accent is horrible (think Chef Boyardee)! And he looks so uncomfortable with that Mandolin! Shame on Nicholas Cage for being an Italian incapable of a proper italian accent!! This movie is so hollywood formulaic and not a terribly shining moment in Nic Cage's career (and I'm a fan). Penelope Cruz is beautiful as ever but she's not enough to carry this picture. Although I haven't read the book, I'm willing to put money down that it beats this sappy movie!

I came out of the film quite disappointed. Most of the characters were unconvincing especially Nicholas Cage with the phoney Italian accent, Penelope Cruz did a bit better with her phoney Greek one. On the whole the film had an amateurish feel about it. The first half of the film is boring and only starts to hold some attention later on. However compared with "Mediterraneo" which has a similar theme, the film is a poor imitation. Even the music is weak. Worth seeing but nothing to get excited about.

Was it just me, or did everyone else think this movie was gonna be about mandarin's, and other delicious fruits? What ever happened to movies with title's that corresponded to the film? What a rip off. I thought this movie wopuld give me a yummy dash of apples and oranges, grapes and papaya. Nicholas Cage shows his true colors as a transvestyte poet. It's quite lovely. Otherwise, this movie was a stink hole. If you semi-liked this, my name MIGHT be JENNIFER LEIGH PERZOW.

This is one of the cutest romance movies I have ever seen. It was truly amazing. The storyline was great and Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz were perfect for the roles. If you haven't seen it yet I definitely recommend it, just make sure that you bring some kleenex with you.

Being greek I thought that the movie was genius. Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage are great together. The scenarios are great. And most of them are real. Trust me I've been there. The story is amazing and the love story is as good as it gets. Had me crying a whole bunch of times. The accuracy of the events that happened so long ago are so well directed and come across so well in this movie. It's soo worth your money to go see it. I'm buying it when it comes out on tape. Great movie!!! I suggest everyone go see it. And to those who thought it sucked. God forbid you should ever become movie critics. Cause you don't know what you're talking about.

I enjoyed the movie, especially the passion expressed and portrayed by the Italian culture. I did not know if Nicholas Cage would reflect this type of Italian flavor, but was pleasantly surprised.

Unconvincing love story. The landscape, the village, etc. were beautiful to look at. Somehow, I just wasn't convinced that the whole story was real -- I wasn't able to "suspend my disbelief".

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I think it is the general case that people who have read the book will be disappointed when they watch the movie, since no matter how hard the actors and actress try, they really cannot show all the content in the book in just two hours. I didn't read the book before, so I enjoy the movie quite much. It is definitely a fairy tale about love, and the scenes in the movie are very good. What I agree with most people who wrote comments here is that there is not so much chemistry between Cage and Cruz. Anyway, it still worthes seeing, especially with a student discount.

Good. Would recommend it as a refreshing relief from typical theatre fare. Transports you lightly into another time and place for an emotional tale. While the youthful age group may find it lacking what they look for, a mature audience or less sensation-seeking group will find it to be a memorable story.

The movie was disapointing compared to the book, but I must say that I enjoyed watching it only because my father was from that island and did fight against the Italians in Albania. My father is not alive to tell me these stories but it gives me an idea of what life was like for him at that time - we have a home in Cephalonia that I visit once in a while so I have to say that the scenery was amazing and I recommend people to visit the island, it is even more beautiful in real life. As far as the actors that played the roles of Pelagia, her father, Madras and Drosoula were excellent - Nicholas Cage was not at his best in this movie, I think his accent took away from his acting - however I enjoyed the movie for personal reasons. The book is totally different and I do strongly recommend reading it.

Pretty movie, bad movie. Penelope Cruz who was so good in Open Your Eyes (and from what I've heard Jamon, Jamon) is all wrong here. Nicolas Cage and she have zero chemistry.

I WON tickets to the première and still feel I should get my money back for this one! There was NO character development, the plot (if you can call it that) had huge holes in it, and the acting/accents was/were atrocious. How can the movie claim to be based on De Bernieres' novel when it ignored, changed, and manipulated major plot lines and characters to give us this shallow and uninteresting Hollywoodized version? My advice: Read the book (it's excellent) and skip the movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie... The scenery was breathtaking and the music was so refreshing. Penelope Cruz was delightful and very believable in her role. I did not really understand the story line and I did not feel Nicolas Cage was right for his role but for the most part, I would recommend this movie to friends.

I've just came back from the movie. My husband who was born in Italy felt very nostalgic because Greece is beautiful like Italy. We both found the cinematography amazing and since it was based on history very interesting. It was most enjoyable!

This movie has spectacular scenery and is supported by an all star cast. The script, however, is predictable and the ending a little flat. Worth seeing for the location shots.

I read the book before seeing the movie and I was dissapointed. The movie is very beautiful estically speaking as well as it's soundtrack, but I feel that it failed to include a lot of important parts and didn't show most of the history and detailed aspects that the book had just for the purpose of creating a "good hollywood movie".

The movie was good, but Nicolas Cage with an accent? Not good. The love story was the part that I liked the best. It was an ok movie. Reason for wanting to see it, was because Nicolas Cage was in the movie. Go see it on a cheapy night, like I did.

A little longer than I would have liked, and kind of predictable, but the scenery, music, and glimpse into the Greek way of life made it enjoyable. Certainly not the best flick out this summer, but worth seeing.

Enjoyed the film, particularly visually. The island was beautiful, and Penelope Cruz is always worth watching. The film version is rarely as good as the original book, but in this case it would definitely have been better not to have the "Hollywood Ending" and stick to the ending in the book. Not a great film, but definitely better than most of the summer schlock out there.

Overall, the movie is good. They could have worked on it a little better. It portraits the Italians and Germans just like my grandfather's stories from the war. I think we should focus on that instead of expecting a love story to die for. At least it is one of the better movies of the summer unlike so many others that have nothing but nothing to offer Tomb Raider, Planet of the apes and malakies like that.

I truly love Mr Cage, but I must say this movie was not what I had expected. The intense romance which I was expecting ended up being more of a Drama/Comedy.

This movie proved to me that Nicolas Cage is the biggest jackass ever on-screen. It would be totally enjoyable if he wasn't in it. Funny that Spanish Penelope Cruz and British Christian Bale and John Hurt are at least convincing as Greek townspeople even though they aren't while Nicolas Cage is Italian (American) and couldn't sound like a real Italian to save his mandolin. I think-a I wanna puke-a. Is it just me, or did it seem like throughout the entire movie he was just thinking, "I'm so hot. I'm the greatest. Look how I can stick out my lips to look ultra-sexy. Penelope Cruz got nuthin on me". This could still be worth seeing as long as you cover your eyes every time NC is in the frame.

Not much action, but the characters and the story make up for it. I don't believe it is really a war movie it is more like a romance story during war.
