[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] POSSIBLY the best war movie I’ve ever seen. Possibly. I really like how there is almost zero character development and the whole thing is just action, action, action. If this was a fictitious tale, then you can go crazy on the whole character development but when you are telling the true story of a bunch of Army Rangers and Delta Force losing their lives on October 3, 1993 in Mogadishu, Somalia, you don’t really want to get all mushy. Just keep it to the facts and go. Ridley Scott does an amazing job at capturing the chaos and mayhem of urban battle with amazing visual finesse. You will barely notice the presence of Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana or Josh Hartnett since their keeping their heads down most of the time trying not to get killed. What I really like is that this is totally based on the book that dude from Philadelphia wrote which was thoroughly researched and critically acclaimed. I like how the movie doesn’t get into the context of the conflict at all (just mentioning that after this day, Bill Clinton pulled all U. S. troops out of Somalia for good), but just concentrates on the fighting that took place that day. This is how, I believe, war movies should be made. Lean, mean, intense and ultra realistic. You’re not gonna run out to the enlistment office after watching this. Movies like this actually do MORE good for war veterans and currently enlisted men because they help audiences understand and sympathize with the actual experiences of combat troops, instead of trivializing them into entertainments. It’s a stunning depiction of actual war. So much so, that you have to remind yourself that you’re not actually watching a documentary.

One of the greatest movies, it gives you a heroic feeling watching it. The actors are pure excellent: Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Brian van holt, Jason Isaacs and of course, Tom Sizemore.

An amazining movie that has wonderful special effects. However the story is incredibly basic and there is no real characters. And when you get sick of the fighting you can stop watching the movie because the rest is more of the same.

One of the best War films I've ever seen, although it didn't involve terrorist activity, which is something I would like in a war film someday.

Ok people, first of all, to all of you complaining about plots, it is a TRUE STORY! They are telling what heppened, not just making up stuff about a true story and putting it in. If it was all made up, how would you fell if you were one of the individuals in that fight? Maybe a bit angry? Second of all, no character development? It's a WAR MOVIE! There is a lot of men in it, and a lot die (unfortunately) and to go through a better portion of them working on character development, would take up the whole movie! Thats what I got to say to you who thought it sucked. I was a prefect movie explaining the courage and brutality that those men suffered. I recommend it for any type of person. If you like drama, go see it and if you like action... well... P. S. Don't complain about blood and gore. I don't think you would be complaining about how it's so gross if you were out there being shot and blown away by bullets and RPG's. Spencer.

What to tell about this movie? The sound is very good. Directing is great. R. Scott did this thing quite well. But this is only a story about those actual soldiers and events that took place in October 1993. There's no real explanation of: whata hell these boys were doing down there? So, why bother to explain that thing before and after the movie? "It's for man next to you" Yeah, right. So, those guys actually fought and died for NOTHING! When you understand this, you figure that this is just another teen palm-swelling shoot'em movie. There's no spirit, and that's very hard but important thing to put in war movies. P. S. Sorry if I made some grammar mistakes, my English is not perfect.

I am not usually very big on war movies, but my ex-husband made me watch this one. I ended up renting it a second time on my own! Very gripping story. Not just about war, but about people. The actors all did a great job, especially Josh Hartnett and, even though a small part, Orlando Bloom. (Must have been quite an experience for Orlando to have to "fall" out of the helicopter after experiencing a terrible fall in real life a few years earlier.) Would definitely recomment seeing the movie.

Great movie... the only thing is, I don't get why the helicopters didn't shoot the skinney's off the roof at the beginning rather than waiting for when it was dark at the end, I guess to make the movie movie more dramatic!!!!! Overall, a great movie!!!!

Based upon a book, which was based upon a series of newspaper articles (for the Phil. Enquirer, IIRC,) which were based on the events of a US millitary action in Somalia in Oct, 1993. This film is not the most accurate or easy to understand portrayal of the events of that tragic sunday, but it will give you a good idea of what an absolute hell it was. If you want to get all the names, dates, times, and background info, read Mark Bowden's book, or look up his earlier newspaper articles. If you want to taste what it felt like to be a part of the US Rangers on that day in 1993, this is the movie for you. This special edition is something I'm looking foreward to: the "making of" documentaries will be interesting, but I'm anticipating the three commentary tracks to be some of the best ever on DVD. The first will feture both director Ridley Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer; the second will feature both the screenwriter, Stephen Gaghan, and Mark Bowden, the man who started this whole project by writing the original BHD newspaper article, then compiling all his data into the best-selling book. These commentaries should give an excellent insight into the process this story has gone through to make its way to the screen: But the commentary I'm really waiting to hear is the third, recorded by several surviving members of the Ranger/Delta squads involved in the operation depicted. Certainly a feature not to be missed. I'm anticipating that this will be one of my favorite DVDs this year, and I can't wait to see what's on the other two discs of special features!

I would've given this a 10/10, but when I compare it with war movies like "Saving Private Ryan", I could only go as far as a 6, however I really enjoyed watching it and thought that Josh Hartnett acted a lot better at this movie then the crapy "Pearl Harbor".

Ok, first of all, this is an absolutely amazing movie. Second, for all those people who gave it a low score cause there was no character development or plot, guess what, this movie was never intended to present those things. It was about telling a story, a true story. And maybe you people were getting sick of the action and all the war scenes and the length. But how would you feel being in those soldiers shoes watching their friends die, and being stuck in carnage for almost 24 hours. This movie showed a very accurate portrayal of war and presented us with a frightening look into the realism of war. They producers of this movie didn't sugar coat anything in this film and if you were expecting a plot and characters, maybe you should actually go see one of those chick flicks. This film told us a true story, thats it. That's all it was intended to do. And I almost forgot, it won an oscar. But I guess that doesn't mean anything.

Reading the comments already made about this movie caused me to want to put my $0.02 worth in. I'm not a "war movie" buff, and I couldn't care less if it had Josh Hartnet or whoever else in it. To those who comment that: "It's an okay knock-off of Saving Private Ryan"... what on earth are you thinking? It's a film about the violence of war that came after Private Ryan, sure... but Private Ryan was (B) fictitious (/B) ! Okay, the storming up Ohmaha beach is real, but that's just what Private Ryan was famous for... not what it was about. While I'm sure that there were parts of Blackhawk Down that were changed from the original "manuscript" (insert a hollow laugh here) , this was taken from very real, very bloody events. An American PBS station did a 1 hour documentary on this monstrous foul-up, interviewing the survivors and such. Go find it, it was a "Frontline" piece. (P) I don't believe that it portrayed the American servicemen as particularly "heroic". It did portray the American upper-echelons as monumentally incompetent. It portrayed the Somali people as living in such desperate conditions that charging a group of heavily armed and armoured Americans with a rusty, old semiautomatic pistol seemed like a "Good Thing"... because maybe, just maybe, if you climbed over a small bloody mountain of your countrymen and emerged with an American's head, you might just get enough food to feed yourself and your family. The servicemen were attempting a task they were (B) not trained for (/B) namely, that of a police force, in arresting a top Somali warlord. They went into a situation that was (obviously) very seriously underestimated by the "experts". (P) I feel that the movie conveyed this mixture of American stupidity and "heroism". The photography and sound took you right into the middle of it, dodging bullets, wishing you could hide behind the seat in front of you. We who watch the film only have to endure about 60 minutes of it. The guys that were there did it for a full day. Could you have done better, if you were in their shoes? (P) Yours sincerely, Scot. (P) PS: I hope these very simple HTML tags worked... if not, well, you figure out what they mean.

Being a fan of the "War" genre I cannot pass this up for one of the best movies ever. The movie had a great sense of desperation that must be a tribute to the men that died that day. Ridley Scott rarely disappoints and this one day epic is characteristically a wonder to watch.

Well, what can I say? The first 35 minutes of this movie is character developpement... the the rest is just war. After about an hour and a half you ask yourself: "Is it over yet?". But very cool action and special effects, though I recommend "We Were Soldiers" as a better movie.

I think people that say it has no story or characters should never watch a movie based on an actual event ever again. ''Black Hawk Down''is a very good and realistically shot movie... it tries to record as best as it can what happened that day in 1993. It's not a character-based film... It's an event-based one! The US were wrong to go into it without informing anybody else and Garrison took responsibility. War is not fun... I think this movie channels that almost as effectively as Oliver Stone's Platoon.

This movie was somewhat bleak and resembled a documentary rather than a full feature film. I found the length of the film to be a challenge, as my buttcheeks were screaming by the end. The only thing I found intiguing about this film was its realistic portrayal of war. There is no fooling around in this movie, only shooting, bleeding (from major arteries that can retract themselves into a pelvis) and more shooting. The only comic relief to be had is when a donkey shows up pulling a cart with no driver halfway through the flick. Don't rent this one if you live in a woodframe apartment and don't want to disturb your neighbors as they will here a lot of machine guns, grenade launchers and helicopters emanating from your sound system. This movie should be seen on a large screen in a theater with comfortable seats. I'm glad I only paid 4 bucks to see this.

I enjoyed the first half of this picture, there was some great camera work especially the aerial shots of the helicopters, but the last half I felt was like watching someone play a video game. You know, one of those relentless shoot-em-up games that cost you a quarter to play for a few minutes. Unfortunately this shoot-em-up goes on an on for over an hour and it gets kind of grotesque and almost silly. At the end, the film credits stated that over a thousand Somalis died in the battle but director Ridley Scott did not need to film every one of those deaths plus what looked like at least a thousand more to make his point.
