Paramount Classics has released some real gems in the last year, but unfortunately "An American Rhapsody" doesn't quite succeed. Don't get me wrong; the is a touching film about a girl's search for her identity, but I don't feel that it realized its full potential. Seeing that this was Éva Gárdos' directorial début, I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, but she did a good job. Scarlett Johansson's (Ghost World) performance was the element that really saved the film. She has a lot of potential, and I hope to see her in more films. Even the adorable Kelly Endresz-Banlaki, who plays Scarlett's character as a child, did an exceptional job. Overall, this film has the quality of a very good made-for-TV-movie. :).
