An excellent movie capturing the ridiculous life of a neurotic New York family. I couldn't stop laughing.

This black comedy has very subtle laughs and themes. This might partly explain why most reviewers either loved it or hated it. Otherwise if you like the idea of a film told in a book-like narrative where characterization is more important than plot and action then you will probably enjoy this film a lot, if on the other hand you want a film where the plot and action carry the film along at a high pace then you will probably hate this movie a lot. For the first half of the film I liked the idea of the former, for the second half of the film I really needed the latter.

Congratulations to Slim Haydy for writing an accurate review in this section. I must admit, if I had seen this movie on video I may have ejected it within the first half hour, but thankfully, I paid the price of admission and it was well worth it. Gene Hackman's pocket-knife stabbing sidekick worth the price of admission alone! Dark, strange and original.

The only reason the score on this movie could be so low is because none of the people that went and saw it - and then voted here - understood it at all. This movie is a masterpiece and deserves a ten out of ten. It is also a travesty that Gene Hackman didn't get nominated for an oscar.

First movie I walked out of. I will give it 2 rather than a 1 because the "1" is reserved only for Sylvestor Stallone's "Cobra".

This is the first movie I have been to in a long time where people actually booed in it. It starts off ok and then drags while getting disturbingly demented. What the hell are these good actors doing in the film. This should sum it up: Because focus groups found it very weak, the distributor came up with a twist to make it commercially quasi successful. (that is pitch the flic as a movie for the "more intellectual". Sadly the film could never come close to anything intelligent)

Gene Hackman was fantastic in this movie. He stole every scene he was in. Overall this is an enjoyable movie, the type that gets better upon repeat viewing.

This movie had great faces, but that's all it had. The humour was so dark it wasn't laughable, and the story seemed like it could have had some potential, but the overall tone made it seem boring.

There was this guy sitting a few seats next to me who was lauging so hard it was difficult to hear this incredible movie. I mean, he was doubled up in pain. It was the movie, or he was a masochist passing a kidney stone. I kinda liked it myself.

Like many amongst you, I was rather disappointed. Although the acting performances were decent, my laughs were scarce and this is coming from a person who enjoys weird, absurd humour. Nevertheless Gwyneth Paltrow is very enjoyable in her role as a lethargic chainsmoker. Wait till the video comes out, then judge for yourself.

It was one of the most consistently interesting movies I have seen in years, which is a much harder feat than you might imagine. You just want to take these poor Tenebaum 'children' home with you to take care of them. Gweneth Paltrow is stunning in a numb and lethargic sort of way (impossible to imagine unless you have seen this movie) I recommend it highly.

Despite all the hoopla and critical acclaim, I was only lukewarm about this movie. The performances were good, and the humour was different, but that was all it had going for it.

This was a fantastic movie. It's very clever and the characters are extremely interesting. Gene Hackman does some of his best work. It's extremely funny in a unconventional way. The humor is very smart and not accessible to everyone. But if you like intellectual movies, this is the one for you. The music is also phenomenal.

This movie was half decent. It wasn't the funniest flick out there, but it gave me a couple of chuckles. Ben Stiller does quite a good job in it. He's quite the character. He seems to be more impressive in every movie.

Good script, real acting, funny and sometimes touching. Most of all, a good characterization of the 70's upper crust family moods. 4 days later and I'm still looking for people to talk to about it. The younger movie going crowd probably won't get the point (can't be that nihilistic when you 18) and the older generation probably won't want to admit to being portrayed by Royal or Etheline. But you know it's you, baby...

This is a good movie, the Wilson brothers are great in their respective roles, Luke is particularly convincing as a washed up tennis star. Gwenyth Paltrow demonstrates a knack for "noir" while Angelica Huston, Gene Hackman and Bill Murray play disenchanted, aging and depressed people. I understand that Ben Stiller fans expecting a hilarious follow-up to "Meet the parents" may have been deceived by the "slapstick" feeling conveyed in the trailer, nonetheless, this movie is truly touching and worth the time. As an added incentive, the movie score is full of fantastic tunes as well.

Ah, the perils of the fractured family. Gene Hackman is delightful as the deadbeat dad and the rest of the cast act out their roles well, as members of this gifted but goofy family (with the exception of Ben Stiller's character who I simply found annoying) Overall it has the feel of a comic or cartoon, part of the latest Hollywood discovery. Everything seems, but nothing is, normal. The effect is like walking through a house of mirrors-a couple of good laughs but nothing memorable. If you miss it in the theatre it will still be worth renting.

Excellent for amateurs of character driven movies. Every actor delivers a weird but perfect performance and we can clearly see what interested them in making the movie: the scenario is simply nuts (by the way, my hat off to Owen Wilson who co-wrote the scenario, amazing emerging talent) It is one of those “slice of life” of a dysfunctional family gigs but it is treated so intelligently that you smile all along at the extent (and somewhat realism) of the characters eccentricities and unbalanced behaviors. People have had mixed feelings about this movie and it is easily understandable; although it deals with tragedy, it does it in a very comic manner but doesn’t fall into parody. Like everything in life, nothing is simply black or white, it is grey, just like this movie. But since people are used to Hollywood’s rainbow, they just don’t get it….

I didn't feel I wasted my money but this is not a great film. The acting is good, plot original but that's the problem. The makers seem to have been caught up in making something different, unusual and somehow forgot they had to make the story interesting.. after a while the concept gets boring. The last part of the movie is better.

A very monotone, bland movie. Only watch this if you want to see an old age depressing man go from "down on his luck" to pathetic. The tone of the movie never changes and it's very slow. This movie is chain smoking at its finest.

Boring musical score. No likeable characters; they're mostly mean, depressed and/or weird. I'm a big fan of Ben Stiller, but not in this movie. You may like this movie if your a sarcastic and pessimistic individual! But don't be fooled by the "adult comedy" label or the supposed intellectuals who gave this movie a high mark!

Royal Tenenbaums offers something different, paced more slowly than the MTV-culture-laden drivel that strobe-light-conditioned movie-goers are used to these days. All reviews below 6/10 can be attributed to imbeciles, who should go see Freddy Got Fingered for a fourth time. Royal Tenenbaums is a crisply written, well-acted, film and there should be more of the like.

I can't say that this was the best movie that I have seen. There were some parts that were funny, but not as many as I would had hoped for. The selection of actors was very good. You don't get to see so many famous actors acting in the same film, but this one was pretty good.

This movie is not a movie. It is a filmed theatre play. I do not understand why so many known actors played in that movie. Boring, no interest at all. One of the worst films ever (I see 100-150 films a year) If you want to see it, wait for its video release.

What a smart comedy! I expect The Royal Tennenbaums to be nominated for some awards. This film was so real. The Tennenbaums could be your next door neighbours! I loved all the stars, but especially Ben Stiller's performance. If you're looking for something a bit off-beat, not your typical Hollywood feature, this movie is for you.

This film was probably one of the best films I've seen in the past year. Spattered with obscure subtleties throughout its entirety, I was never without a smile on my face, whether due to the random Charlie Brown soundtrack or the ingenuity of the cast members. An excellent film, one which will probably get bad reviews from people who are used to being spoiled by special effects and dizzying plot twists instead of appreciating the cerebrally stimulating offerings that this film is responsible for.

Amusing at times, slow at other times, ridiculous throughout. That ridiculous part is probably what would endear an audience to this film. The setting, the dialogue, the characters' wardrobe... all delightfully odd and unique. However, the characters themselves are one dimensional, and are no different from the beginning minutes of the film to the final few. Even cartoon characters these days expand themselves, growing and developing in front of our eyes, genuinely making us care. The cardboard cutouts called the Tenenbaums miss the mark, and unfortunately so does the bulk of this film. Something to catch on video or DVD. If you enjoy quirky movies, perhaps on a Tuesday. It definitely needed more work.
