I've heard that the Coen brothers will throw stuff at the audience from out of the blue. This movie is no exception to that. What the girl tries to do to Billy Bob in the car was really surprising and so was his seeing the visitor while in prison. Not a bad movie but I don't think it's for people who prefer straightforward stories with no surprises coming out of left field.

I really dont know what to think of this flick... In some ways I hated and loved it at the same time. But now I realize that it's the last coen flick that I will remember really. One thing -) I really liked the B&W though. It always fitted with their genre which is the 1940's film noir. Inégal.

I was a bit dissapointed. I went in thinking it would be artsy and deep, but it wasn't really. You can't put yourself in the character's shoes because their performance is really slow and indifferent. I liked the way it was directed though, nice camera angles and the whole black and white genre. But the story wasn't good.

Others have said it before, it's great. The black and white photography is so good (ansel adams style) I had to sheild by eyes from a bright scene to look into the shadows and found still detail still there. That's hard to do!

The Coen brothers have made a classy black and white film that perfectly fits the the tone of the movie - a film noir with the themes of lives gone off the tracks and adultery. The pace is slow but the conclusion inevitable.

Genius. Pure Genius. One of the most visually impressive films I've ever seen.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this movie. Everything about it, including the careful pacing, was impeccably and professionally done. But it didnt reach me. I felt like the movie was made for somebody else.

This is an excellent film! The best aspect would have to be the black and white photography. Joel and Ethan have done an amazing job with every scene created for this film. The acting is also very well done. I could see this one again and again!

After I saw this movie I felt that it was one of those films you could only watch once, but after thinking about I thought to myself, this is a master piece.

A masterful effort from the Coen Brothers... beautifully shot... Billy Bob Thornton's voiceover narration hits the right note... One the best films from 2001.

This film depended too much on strictly mimicing the film-noir style, but didn't quite hit it. I hate voice over at the best of times, and this wasn't the best written voice over so it was rather irritating and took you out of the movie. Still, a very interesting and visually stunning film. Not Coen brother best, but better than the vast majority of films being offered right now.

This is a very peculiar movie. It borrows heavily from film-noir style, but Billy Bob Thornton's almost deadpan, extremely subdued and close to lifeless character is the real mystery here. It so often seems that the Coen brothers leave you just short of that "Wow, what an amazing movie" feeling. There is some brilliant stuff here, supurbly beautiful camera work, but something always seems to be missing, and that seems to be the answer to "Why make this movie? " To me it says very little about today, and though its set in the late 40's, other than the style, it doesn't say much about then either, nothing that wasn't said much better in the films of that time. So I'm not sure what they were trying to capture. As someone above said, it would be interesting to hear from the Coen's a little bit more about the movie. However, I'd still say its worth seeing, if only to form your own opinion.

May be a bad sign, but I need to see an interview with the Coen bros to know if I liked this movie. Irregardless, nice film work, mostly entertaining.

Billy Bob is a depressed Forrest Gump. Just because a movie is slow and in black and white doesn't mean it's art! Pass on this movie!!

This movie takes a very cynical attitude of human nature. Viewers must suspend some belief in common sense in order to allow the story and themes of the movie to proceed, which may be asking to much especially for the end result. While very stylishly directed in film noir, the story leads the viewer to a possible redemption that comes crashing down at the end leaving you with nothing but a bad taste in your mouth. Perfect Coen brother fair!

Yawn! Coen brother certainly not at their best. I´m a big fan, saw all their movies. This time however bibo´s monotonous monologues made me fall asleep while the plot developed unnervingly slow. Sorry guys, it´s not enough to hire Billy Bob and trust him to do the rest.

As usual, the story is the most important part of this movie. Nicely filmed by the Cohen bros, all the actors do a good job. It's just facinating staring at Billy Bob Thorton the whole movie.

Superb new film by Joel and Ethan Coen. Shot in stunning black & white photography and film-noir style, The Man Who Wasn't There is one of their strongest efforts to date. Many of the familiar Coen Brother themes are present, such as "average-joe caught up in circumstance above-and-beyond his control" and "crazy schemes gone awry" mixed with snappy dialogue and sharp comedy. One of the year's best films.

A true Classic and a must see for any real "film" fans. If you liked Rush Hour 2 or any other silly action films you will hate this film. But if on the off chance you have half a brain and and a love of beauty and art, this is a must see film.

Taking place in post war middle America, this film and its characters painted a wonderfly heavy screen experiance. Over all I thought this was a great peice, but this black and white film seemed somewhat of a departure from more recent Cohen Brothers films (Oh Brother, ect) and delved heavely into a stark and broody "film noir" style that one would more regularly associate with the likes of Jarmoush or Bergman. Wonderfully dry performances by Billy-Bob Thorntin, Frances McDormant and James Gandolfinni will not disappoint. Cohen fans looking for the ever quirky and off beat charactors weve learned to expect. **** A +.
