Great role for Frances McDormand. I thought the character's were interesting but could have been developed further. Same for the relationships between major characters. The background of the L. A. rock scene was right on the money. The film did not seem to live up to it's potential, although I found it interesting to view.

It concerns a free spirit, dope smoking, boozy, sexy, rock music producer Mom (Frances) who resides in a funky studio / home high (sic) in Laurel Canyon in L. A... and her tight-assed straight arrow Harvard Medical School graduate son. Son and his fiancé, Alex, move in with Mom while he interns in L. A. Much role reversal and misunderstanding ensues, followed by 'a new understanding' for all. I thought it was worth a look, but not completely successful.

Whoever said they didn't enjoy this movie clerly missed the point. It's light, yes -- so what? It's a good rock 'n' roll movie and that's all that matters. And who said the band sucked? Come on, man, both songs were written by Mark Linkous!! And delivery on them was superb. Sparklehorse fans will surely appreciate..

I still haven't figure out what the point of this picture was. Nothing in it had any basis in reality and what little story there was - well who really cares. A couple of compelling performances and rich visual appeal but that's about it for this very forgettable film..

A disappointment. Frances McDormand is always fun to watch but the script was lacking. Sounded like a first effort which perhaps it was. Also lacking was the (A-Z) ale lead (Christian Bale?) Not a good choice, Robert Downey Jr. Would have been far better. The Alex character was alright but the victim of poor direction and overall the film was unsatisfying, with predictable and not terribly convincing dialoge. Only rabid McDormand fans need go. Othewise -- PASS.

A fascinating movie about expectations. How we expect mothers to behave, how we perceive married people or straight people, artists, etc... Frances McD. Plays a role usually only reserved for men. It is refreshing and challenging. Not a film for the lazy and the conformist. Rent the director's first film if you can, High Art.

Fabulous -- great to see Frances Mcdormand again and in such a risqué role! Encore, please.

The movie was slow, unbelievable and all around lacking. It was a hollywood movie trying to be independant. For some reason, every actor had to look like a model and the band was just plain awful. Don't go see this movie, it's like watching Britney Spears trying to be Bob Dylan. It just doesn't work.

Laurel Canyon is a great movie for the season, a kind of post-Oscar movie. Everything works, the script is very original, the acting is superb. Nothing is profound, but it is all very precise. 20 minutes and I was in the mood - the atmosphere is complete. One bad thing: The band, in the movie, is not good. But the rest of the soundtrack is excellent.

I was surprised to see such a low average rating for this flick. Francis Mcdormand was so fantastic, as was the fellow who played the recording artist (character name Ian?) Their chemistry was so believable. Totally atmospheric and engaging!
