[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Don't go if you want an escape from reality, or are feeling particularly frail emotionally. Go when you can focus, go when you feel you can handle a very tragic story told in a unconventional way - I've never seen a more non-linear plotline. I thought the cinematography was gorgeous - somehow I can relate to the bare grey-blue tones used for most of the film (except during the gorgeous shots of Sean Penn's and Naomi Watt's bodies during their sex scene) that evoke both beauty and despair. I also recall thinking "this town reminds me of Memphis" which I visited breifly - and saw in the credits that part of the film was shot there. Funny how brief impressions of images can stay in your head and shape a feeling, a memory. One of the last shots in the film, which will stay with me forever, was Naomi Watts looking up at Benicio Del Torro - and in a second you know she doesn't hate him anymore, but what she feels exactly... that shot was just brilliant.
