The ‘loco' of the film is an endangered shellfish found off the southern coast of Patagonia. Its qualities as an aphrodisiac are legendary, and it commands a small fortune in Japan. Loco, of course, is also the Spanish word for crazy. When the authorities briefly lift a moratorium on harvesting the loco, it send the fishing village of Puerto Gala into a frenzy, as all and sundry, including a travelling troupe of prostitutes, attempt to cash in on the bonanza.
