What incredible acting skills this man has! Even if this movie WAS done poorly, I would still give it a 10 for Bale's acting! (In addition , he lost about 80 pounds just to play the part) But the best part is... the movie WAS very well done, with an amazing concept of the main character's imagination that indulges you into a euphoric mentality. All I could say was "WOW".

DVD: "The MacHinist"
Stark, gruesome. Like a strange, modern Dostoyevsky book in movie-form.

Christian Bale's physical appearance in this movie is truly shocking. What blows it away is his performance. He is a wonderful, but underrated actor who has great range. Recently having seen both Batman Begins and The Machinist, I found a new respect for him and what he's capable of bringing to an audience. I look forward to seeing him in more title roles. He's THAT good!

I was looking forward to seeing this movie for months. However I found that it did not have much of a story. Though the last 10 min. Where good. Christian Bale preforms very well and the faults of the movie should not fall on him. The people that have "WOW" need to look at the whole movie, and not just the end.

A good movie but I could see if your not in the mood to think it could be very confusing and probably not worth watching till your actually able to sit down with no disturbences.

A very chilling and disturbing tale, beautifully crafted and ingeniously filmed. Christian Bale gives a stunning performance and the film leaves you with confusing thoughts that will follow you for a couple of days, leaving a lasting impression.

I watched this movie right before watching Batman Begins so it was pretty astonishing to see Christian Bale's transformation from The Machinist to Batman Begins. Another fine performance. The Machinist is dark and depressing but well acted and stands out from all the other garbage out there. It's too bad this movie was only in limited release when it came out in theatres. Don't miss out--Rent it!

Stylistically the movie succeeds and Christian Bale does a nice acting job portraying a 'haunted man'. The best scene takes place in a truly unique 'house of horrors' at a carnival. However, unless you don't see very many movies, you will probably guess 'the surprise ending' Long before you are supposed to. Interesting, but Session 9 was still a better Brad Anderson movie.

I read the reviews here and then decided to go see this film. It was a mistake. Some nice images, but I was bored. I felt a guilt like I was supposed to be a better, more understanding person and feel more interest. But I did not. Too bad. Go see something else and forget the other comments.

This is a gripping thriller/mystery that goes beyond the Hitchcock tradition. Clues about the mental state of the central character are planted carefully throughout, so that a complete understanding of what actually happened isn't revealed until the very end.

I went into this movie knowing nothing about the plot, which I prefer. And was greatly impress. I saw Christian Bale in "American Psycho" and thought his performance then was not great as the movie itself was bad. But in this one, he shone. The feeling and set up of the story line worked well as you feel Reznik's confusion and paranoia. Also, the character of Reznik is mixed one, he's a protaganist and antagonist at the same time and this scale swings both ways through out the movie. Definitely worth the admission fee.

A much much better effort then brad williams 1st effort 'session 9'. this film truly defines a psycological thriller. Creepy performances, a good storyline, and good direction/editing makes it all come together. Christian Bale deserves alot of props for his effort.

SAVE YOUR MONEY! Any review here that is short and wonderful must have been written by the film's distributor. Absolute garbage for anyone who really loves thrillers. You get the sense that the only way to get a budget in Hollywood is to sell a plot that is a patchwork of previously successful movies. The result: crap.[...] Split personality themes are overkill. Rewatching Psycho would have been more fun.

I actually didn't want to see this movie and my husband talked me into... so very glad he did. I try to avoid movies that "disturb" me, being a ++ sensitive person, but this movie had a very intriguing story of how the truth can set you free. You'll still be thinking about it days later... Bale did a fantastic job and deserves at least a nomination for his role (and not just because he got down to a frightning 119lbs) I highly recommend this movie - even for you sensitive types!!

It's hard to get past Christian Bale's skeletal appearance, especially when he takes off his shirt... Objectively, I think Bale gives a near-great performance as a man with all the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. Before we find out what happens to Trevor the film flips back in time and retraces Trevor's activities in the weeks before. It's a dark and unpredictable journey. [...]

Of course it's a brilliant movie if you like staring at a guy who must weigh 10 pounds and feel as if your going to throw up at some of the shots. If thats what you like go for it. For us normal people I must say, this movie was like oil and jam on toast. It doesn't go and it makes you a bit sick to your stomach on how bad it is. The fuglyness of it all is immense and strong. In fact, its about the only thing strong in this movie, for the script was Long and tedious, the actors seemed to think their apperance would make us bypass their bad acting. The director, why he was the worst. Short, clippy cuts and Long scenes semmed to make up this movie. My review? 100 000 thumbs down!

Movie always keeps you in suspense. A true horror, since everyone's worst fear is to lose touch with reality. Quite nearly a masterpiece, just lacking a strong ending. But by no means a disappointment. The main actor deserves best actor award and his mastery of the art is simultaneously marvelous and spooky... his acting alone earns this film a 10/10.

The movie is quite good and deals in very orginal fashion with the issues of guilt, pain, and redemption. Some people wrongly attribute it with the Matrix like plot. Nothing like that. SO, EXCELLENT MOVIE TO WHATCH!

You have never seen a film like this one. There really should be a "Most Difficult Role To Play" Award at the Oscars and Christian Bale would have to win this one. I was in shock watching what was left of such a gorgeous man after having lost over 60 lbs for his role in the Machinist. I understand he suffered some serious health problems after this extraordinary experience and physical alteration. Thoughts of the prisoners of the Holocaust, came to my mind. The haunting look in his face, the bulging eyes and the way his thin body seemed to hang by a thread. I was amazed that he could even walk, never mind run, which he did. He must have fainted many times. Scarry! If you are a cinephile and see many movies, I would recommend it, as it is most unique.

Christian Bale does a great job. His intensity is mind-blowing, given the physical transformation he went through. Good pacing and direction; great dark mood; somewhat predictable ending, but overall a very gripping tale. Go see it.

Brad Anderson's The Machinist was basically a combination of about 6 other movies. There has been a flurry of movies in recent years about characters who see things that no one else can, who hallucinate to hide some secret past that the audience only finds out about at the end and so on. During the movie I felt I had seen it so many times before. The only redeeming elements from the film were Bale's performance and a rather disturbing scene in an amusement park haunted house.

Come on: Memento meets Fight Club edited by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Seemed like five cool ideas inserted into a cliche framework, with a cheezy ending. Save your money.

This was a interesting movie. Worth a look. Christian Bale gives a mind blowing, haunting performance worthy of an Oscar. He's an acting protege in my opinion. American Psycho was another great performance but the movie was quite repulsive. He was the little kid in Spielberg's Empire of the Sun, so he's been doing it for awhile. Check this one out!

WoW, it was so WoW!!! I guess Christian Bale suffered. I think "The Machinist" have surpassed "American Psycho". I love most of Christian Bale's movies. I think the only bad one is the "Reign of Fire". I could not really recoganize him at the begining. But this movie, I can see why he's the best actor among his age. I hope he gives me another surprise when the Bateman comes... =)

What a ride! This movie is one of the best film of this genre that I have ever seen. Christian Bale, who apparently lost 60 pounds for this role, is amazing as a character whose body and soul are literally being eaten away by... never mind. Just go watch this film.
