Apparently Margo Stilley, like Maria Schneider who was in Last Tango in Paris, in retrospect after the film was released, felt that she had been exploited and humiliated. Likely director Winterbottom chose to film the explicit details of his two main actors actually having sex multiple times in order to go beyond traditional moral codes of self censorship, but the resulting film succumbs to being pornography.

If you consider it a non porn movie, it has little story to tell. But it has more story to tell than a 100% porn movie. Picutures and camera shots are not bad.

I saw 9 songs at the festival of new cinema last year. The room was packed and the tension was high. Yes Michael Winterbottom, director of the excellent 24 hour party people, has made a flawed film. But he is a pionneer. The first film that depicts sexuality, within a love story, without the hipocrisy and censorship of purintan Hollywood, without the self loathing and shame of Catherine Breillat's Romance or the shocking violence of Gaspard Noe's Irreversible. The filmmaker builts it up slowly as the love between the caracters grows. And releases the tension with concert footage of famous Brit bands at the Brixton academy in London where the couple met, and return often for shows. Where pornography more than often exploits women, it is refreshing to see two beautiful people going at it for something else then money and degradation. Yes the plot is thin but if you are progressive minded go see it to push your bounderies and to witness the first film in history that the British censors left untouched because they felt the sex was in context... This might be a glimpse into the future of cinema.

Basically you're going to sit through a movie that does away with plot, characters and a sensible story line in favour of two wooden actors performing pornographic acts on film... with concert bits mixed in. Not reccomended at all.

I had the dubious fortune of renting the DVD while on a recent business trip. Anyway, this short film is essentially a porn film masquerading as a legitmate art film portraying the life cycle of a summer romance. Like most porn films, there really isn't much of a story to tell. As for the sex, predictably, there isn't anything here that you most likely haven't seen or done before. My advice is to wait for the DVD and rent it if you absolutely, positively can't think of anything better to do.
