I don't know what all these people find so great about the movie. I was expecting to see lots of sexy CanCan dancers with great dancing scenes, frolicking with the men in the audience -after all, that is what went on in the real Moulin Rouge, it was a dance show and a brothel! Instead the few CanCan dancing scenes, each of which lasted a fraction of a second -- unless you blinked, in which case you wouldn't have seen any -- were so choppy and blurry that you have to seriously wonder whether the editors were either totally insane or doing very bad drugs, or perhaps both. Oh sure, the movie does slow down when the singing begins, unfortunately, it goes on forever. That would not be so bad if the actors were also great singers, but they're not. Should I waste my time mentioning anything else, oh heck, why not. The script was neurotic, the sets were cheap, stupid and gaudy. Should I go on? I don't think so. So what do I think is a great movie? Go see the Golden Bowl for a visual feast, terrific acting, captivating story, sumptuous photography, fantastic costumes, incredible settings, and it's all shown in real time, that is, the same pace as normal breathing.
