Very slow at times, the direction of the plot is unsure of its self in the middle of the film, not the greatest of performance from Bale, though the 30min of the film saves this character study & the shootout scene is well drawn out.

When I first heard the critics I was skeptical about this film, but now that I've watched it I understand that it depends on the viewer. Either you will be disgusted by the psycho-gritty mood of the film, or you will relate to the relationships amongst the characters. If driving around sipping forties and committing other illicit acts with your homies while trying to shut out the responsibilities of the real world is something you've never done, you probably won't appreciate the movie. But if so, you'll get into it.

I honestly don't get why an actor like Christian Bale who's shown so much talent in batman and the machinist would stoop this low for a role that is not worthy of his talent. He basically plays a [...]. I guess he thought he could bring more to the role than meets the eye but obviously that didn't work.. at all!

I love Christian Bale's acting... But in this film... I am sorry but listening to him try... I do say TRY to talk like he is from the ghetto is just plain SAD and utterly disappointing... I sat there and watched this movie and thought ooohhh my gosh thisis so damn bad... Wondering what the hell is the point to this movie... And better yet Why did I not listen to my gut when it said trash when I was wondering if I should watch this film... VERY VERY VERY bad HOrrible film... No point... Lousy acting.

It seems that, when visiting the theatre, it is the general idea that, in the two hours spent, a lot will happen on screen and if this isn't so, the immediate reaction is: "Boring"," Slow" etc; I cannot deny this film made use of a small-scale plot, but the story was quite an in-depth character analyses (anyone failing to understand the difference between the terms: "plot" and "story" should do some research on film) Christian Bale shines, deserving, rarely granted praise of his talents as an actor (The Machinist, his previous role, was virtually ignored in North America) For a directorial debut this film should receive more attention (positive) than it is currently in main-stream theatres.

This movie was bad! Way too long (over 2 hours) and nothing happens. I wouldnt even recommend this movie as a renter. No climax, nothing... If you enjoy watching grown men talking ghetto, drink beer and smoking dope this movie is maybe for you!

Waste of time... kept hoping it would pick-up and get better, but not. Random violence without much plot.

This movie is very violent and you really need to accept it for what it is to enjoy it. Throws out some curves and makes the viewer say "wt[...]" more than once.

Its definitely a Harsh Movie. Haha. Used already probably. Bale is awesome but you can see the twists and turns in this movie way before they come on screen so it gets borin. To have made it better I would have had more flashbacks to IRAQ or afganastan to sorta help with bales character downward spiral. I think it would have been like a 3 for me if not for Bale.

Anybody that says this movie sucks didn’t stay more than a half hour. Anybody that says that Christian Bale didn’t do a good performance and that this role didn’t suite him well doesn’t know [...] about Christian Bale and acting. This movie was good, the acting was excellent and the guy, well... was pretty [...]

The acting in this movie was HORRIBLE, I really enjoy movies and can put up with acting but I believe that if the producers casted a bunch of gorilla's the movie would be just as good if not better.

By far the worst movie I have ever seen I am almost sad to hear that it came from the same people as Training Day I mean this movie makes Soul Plane look like it deserves an oscar.

It was okay movie. The beginning was kinda cheezy, slow, and Bale's accent was a bit off. But it later picked up. Overall I thought the movie was worth seeing. Bale was hilarious and dramatic when needed.

I never write revies and I am a huge film buff. This movie is the first time I was compelled to walk out of a movie in my life. And this from a guy who thinks Batman Begins was incredible if you need a frame of reference.

Not worth the price of admission or rental. Another rip off film that tricked you into seeing it by a misleading built-up trailer..

If you want to see Christian Bale act like a 15 year old latino who says "dawg" and "dude" every two seconds, you should go see this movie. As a few people said below, this movie is bad beyond words... it's actually impossible to describe how bad it is. Christian Bale was amazing in The Prestige, but I couldn't get it through my head how terrible he was in this.

I don't know where to begin regarding this movie. I don't know what the director had in mind when making it. It not because the movie is bad, I think they focus on the wrong thing! The should of focus more on WHY the caracter of Christian Bale behaving this way. There was no direction, I couldn't figure out where the story was going. Couldn't figure out the dynamic between Christian Bale versus Marta(girlfriend) or Freddy Martinez(Bestfriend) The movie not BAD per say it just lack sustance...

I can't remember when I last saw a movie that was so intense. I was on edge for the whole movie, sudden jolts of unexpected violence around evey corner. A great movie has you feel for the characters, this is one of them.

Unbelievably bad. Catwoman was better, if that's possible. Feels like two guys in Wyoming saying "What's up dog? " or "Hey, my Homey! " Missed the mark and then some. Pointless and boring. I'm a huge Bale fan, but this is really one of the worst films ever. She wanted to stay or I would have left after about 30 minutes.

I tried liking it but there was something offbeat. Might of been the character played by Bale (It just didn't suit him) or the plastic bond between both protagonists or even the fact that there was no real poignant development in the narrative. I don't know! Like I said, I tried to like it and to give the film a chance but it blew my head and my interest right out of my mind. It's a shame.

I'm very sorry to all those who anticipated this movie at all... I saw it last night and it was honestly a waste of my 2 hrs, and $10. I was waiting for this movie to get better, but it never did. Throughout this film nothing actually happens, avoid at all costs!

This movie doesn't know what it wants to be, the acting is brutal and there is nothing redeeming about about any of the characters except Eva Longoria who towards the end of the movie packs her bags to leave, which I should have done about 10 minutes in. Basic premise, a couple of guys that street talk LA style who need to grow up, stop smoking dope and drinking beer (which by the way is the main theme of the movie)and get jobs. Utter garbarage steer way clear of this. I want my money back plus a wage for sitting through this trash.

If the academy has any sense left in their heads, Christian Bale will get the Oscar for Best Actor of 2006 for his role as Jim Davis... Harsh Times is so intense, I exitted the theatre psyched... and as for Best Picture, if a movie about a [...] journalist can win, Harsh Times sure as hell can too.

Although suffering a very stagnant plot and questionable "twists", this film really delivers a spontaneous outlook on the life of two friends in a violent Los Angeles. Good action, and lots of fun.

A very interesting movie about a really weird guy and his friend... There wasn't a lot of action and the movie won't win anything but Christian Bale should get an Oscar for his outstanding performance!

Bad beyond words, Eva Longoria is barely in the film. First movie I ever saw where half the audience left before the end. Cristian Bale was a disaster. I can't find words to describe how stupid and bad this movie was - they should have paid me.
