Really enjoyed this touching film. Slow perhaps, but some great films are. Didn't really buy that Mauro's parents wouldn't even check if someone was there before they left, but perhaps they were concerned about being spotted. Definitely worth seeing unless you only like Hollywood blockbusters.

Didn't find this film to be very entertaining; intellectually or otherwise. Yes, there is the backdrop of military rule and the world soccer championship of 1970, but the latter events could have been better portrayed than thru this kid movie; in other words, a better story line to evoke these important historical moments of Brazilian history would have been better. The acting is good yet this one just didn't take off for me. At best, 6½.

I am shocked to see bad reviews for this touching and captivating movie. This was a really good film, not sentimental, that draws the curtain on a very difficult period in Brazil's history, as seen through the eyes of a young boy. Well acted, good dialogue, touching.

If you are Brazilian, or at least know about the soccer and political history about that country in the 70s, it is worth seeing. Difficult for people who don't know the history.

Great movie, reminiscent of Cinema Paradiso but a little slower;

Not at all sentimental, this story of a political waif caught in the desperate times of Brazil in 1970 is engaging and inspires reflection. Young Mauro is neither precocious nor endearing as he contacts his deceased grandfather's Jewish community. The real hero of the film is Schlomo, the initially dismissive neighbour who brings the boy's predicament to the community for support, debate and resolution. They accept abandonned Mauro like a proverbial Moses amidts the reeds, and reminds one of the great Jewish invocation that the holiest act is to save a child. The metaphor of sport as the panacea for social crisis is handled deftly, and gives the film a dollop of exuberance that relieves the cultural tension between left and right. It is not an easy film to like. Children play well in spite of the craziness of the adults, and that is redeeming. Hanna is pixieish as she pimps the local boys burgeoning lust by selling them voyeuristic access to her mother's clothes store change room. By the end of the film I felt that I had joined the line and paid director Cao Hamberger to peep at his political cant. Not a dignified position, perhaps, but gratifying in a furtive way. That's what this story is --furtive, in the sense of a shifty landscape of hidden motives. One hard for a young boy to engage, who grieves for his lost parents. A little more emotional warmth in the film would have been gratifying, and a comfort to the lost child in all of us, who must wait and suffer patiently for redemption.

A fantastic atypical Brazilian film. We get an interesting glimpse into Brazilian culture in Sao Paulo during the era of the dictatorship, all through the eyes of a young boy. Very cleverly done and beautiful cinematography.

Quite a good movie; a realistic, well-acted and somewhat touching story. I think they could have added a bit more character development or elaboration on the dynamics of some of the relationships and the lives of the secondary characters at parts. Apparently the boy was ther for over a year (two world cups), but the film gives the sense its much shorter. Would give it a 7.5 if I could.
