It had great intensity that really made the movie. The part where Otilia is at the dinner table is so well done, you really feel her anxst. Great performance from Anamaria!

They say is not what you present, but how you do it what gives your art the power of expresion. This movie had the "what" but lacked the "how", unfortunatelly. It is not art to grab a camera, go to Darfur for example, preferably during a militia raid, and film a whole bunch of dead people. That's reality, no one could ever argue that, but does it represent art? To go back to this movie: I felt it was a blunt representation of what Romania looked like during comunism. Nothing more than that. A documentary, if you'd like. Full of obscenities, disturbing images, raw facts. I wrote the key word: raw. This is what this movie was all about, this is why the western world is so thrilled with it: it is raw, un-edited, maybe even full of some kind of exotism. I have seen a lot of disturbing movies about violent times and ruthless people (what could be more desturbing for example than what the Schindler's List presents? ), but they all more or less had the "how", managed to give people some "inside" ," what if I..." perspective. Not this one. When will people learn that a bunch of obscenities do not make a good movie? Very disappointed...

This is not an easy film to watch, you might even think nothing is happening, but how loaded is the message here. Many claim this is a film simply about abortion. But I don't agree... I saw it as the politics of women not only those living in a communist regime but in our society... the duality of roles pressed upon her. As painful as it was to sit through this film. Partly for being witness to the grim atmosphere and the stylistic bareness... in retrospect this was a beautiful story about friendship between 2 women, that they have only each other to count on... the irony of the situation that one woman must perform inorder to free the other, that they are both polytech students traditionally a mans pursuit doesn't belie the repression here is at the hands of men, and cruelly abortion is the byproduct of a womans emancipation. And we are left with the number 1, the haunting image will not leave you.

Almost from the onset you sense a tension, not knowing exactly what is going to happen or how. Anamaria Marinca is excellent in her role has Otilia; very credible acting. It's good cinéma, worth about 8½!

I liked the movie... It is very realistic and shows the misery, the poverty and the fear people lived in under the Sovietic regime in Roumania... The movie really disturbed me... Some scenes were a bit too graphic for me, especially when we see the aborted foetus... I thought about it for a long time after seeing it... The actors are superb and very touching, the long shots and images also... It is disturbing to see what women had to go through not so long ago to end a pregnancy... this movie just strengthens my belief that women should be able to choose whether or not to get an abortion and should be able to get one in safe and hygienic conditions. This movie really makes you think about human relationships and the limits of friendship... I would recommend it...

Excellent film. Yes, it's disturbing, that's reality. Everything was well done. It's been almost half a year since I've seen it and I still remember it vividly; it'll probably always stay in the back of my mind.

This is quite a piece of cinematography. The acting is amazing and the movie is cutting deep to the core of the human soul in extreme situations. What you will see is just a little part from the non-sense of the communist regime, which East-Europe went through, those years. From the attitude of the people (characters) you can grasp the idea, though. Very important is the dinner scene, where the high middle class families in the Romanian society of that time are shown. The empty talk, the misconceptions and the false impression of "things are pretty good" bring forward the daily life of that time. This is a must see movie for any art lover.

Great movie but I think the action takes place actually in the capital of Romania, Bucharest... not in a small town...

Take a deep breath, things like that might happen almost everywhere as long as mad people rule our world. This is a European masterpiece, difficult to digest by the Holywoodian movie lovers.

This is indeed a great film - un grand chef d'oeuvre, definitely not meant for those who look to cinema to be entertained and to escape. It is a work of art and as true art is always, it is a reflection of reality - in this case a reality that is difficult to face. Though the story takes place in Romania, it could happen anywhere today; Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia for it portrays the plight of a people who are at the mercy of a draconian system built on ideological belief. The story of the two girls beautifully portrayed by Anamaria Martinca and Laura Varincu, is touching and reflects what women in many countries have to undergo in order to survive. Although bleak at times, the film does give remote hope and is a testament to the strength of the human spirit to bear fight and continue... Is the "weaker" sex not actually the stronger and more resilient? The photography, tightly knit script, the attention to details and its humane quality make it truly a memorable and worthwhile watch.

The movie is absolutely remarkable, in its rigourous reproduction of the times and attention to the smallest details. The most striking feature is however its realism. I anticipate that this is the precise reason why many Westerners may miss some of the details - but also why many viewers in Romania will hate it.

It's the typical European independent drama; explicit, realistic and bitter. Quite disturbing at times. Psychologically very complex. The shots are brilliant at emphasizing the psychological drama. The dialogs are very realistic and often very hard to translate without losing the contextual meaning. Overall extremely well done, with attention to the smallest details.

Ever wonder what it would be like to live in Romania during the reign of Ceausescu? The disturbing 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days gives you an excellent idea. Everything about the film is so naturalistic and detailed that you feel drawn right into its nightmare world as if you're experiencing it with the characters. While grim and harrowing, it's also a fascinating chronicle of a dark period in recent history. The director, Cristian Mungiu, brilliantly creates an unbearable tension, but as the events go terribly awry for the two young women at the centre of the story, the situation never feels anything less than true. A masterwork.

A haunting movie, in every sense; cinematically "minimalistic", it is a dramatic, paradoxical and almost unbearable questioning of the very meaning of life.

I thought it was very interesting to see the situation in romania at the time that I didn't know much about. The acting was perfect and the movie was made in such a way that you were sucked into it. It was so real, you really felt what they were going through. On the other hand, I found that it wasn't so much about friendship, I mean it didn't even look like they liked each other. It felt to me more like otilia ( I think thats her name) was kind of making sure that if ever she was in that situation, she would have someone there for her who would have to help her. The girl who got the abortion (gabi) was so irritating though!! I couldn't stand her, she was so selfish. All in all, excellent movie but very difficult to watch and so stressful!

A big disappointment. Sad, depressing, negative, angst-inducing and very disturbing. Those with a sensitive nature should abstain.

This movie was so depressing. This may have been well filmed and interestingly acted, but I wish I hadn't seen it. There's a graphic scene that I can't get out of my head, and not in a good way.

Terrible, depressing film. I wanted to know more about the Communist regime under Ceaucescu - I got that - but the film was anxiety producing and negative. I usually agree with the Palme d'Or choice at Cannes but this time, I strongly disagree.

I loved this movie. I am myself Roumanian and I found that the movie was so realistic it was crazy. It touches a great tradedy after the second world war in Roumania, the black market of abvortion. The only bad thing I can find about this movie is that the traslation is really horrible. If you don't speak roumanian or can't see it in the original language, wait for the rental at least.

The story revolves around the issue of abortion, but there are other strong message out there: how far you would go in friendship? To what extent you sacrifice for your friend? It is also about stupidity of man and his forgetfulness. At the time of need and despair one feels miserable and disparateness, he is weak and vulnerable and intends to do anything; but when the moment of desperation passes, he is forgetful and stupid again! Do we learn any lesson? The movie is tense and is made so real and striking, it is the reality of our life which strikes back to us. It is shocking. Well done! The acting was superb.
