Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear) was your average suburban working dad with a beautiful wife (Lauren Graham) and six kids. Then, one day, he invented the intermittent windshield wiper for cars and, when his invention became an industry standard, Robert believed he and his family would become set for life. However, all of the automobile manufacturers shut Robert out of any profits and he spent the rest of his life suing them for proper credit and compensation.
