Following his mother's death, handsome, taciturn Thomas, returns to his hometown. A chance meeting leads him to Ali, a Turkish immigrant who owns a chain of roadside snack bars. Ali takes a liking to Thomas, offering him a job as his driver and assistant. Laura, Ali's beautiful, disconsolate wife, treats Thomas coolly, keeping him at a distance at first. On a beautiful afternoon, the three head to the beach. Thomas sits next to Laura, while Ali dances, drunken and absentmindedly, to the notes of a Turkish tune, setting in motion a series of events that will change their lives.
