This is a classic. It was the first movie I saw in theaters when I was 5. I still cry when I watch it. The special effects were very «avant-garde». Spielberg has always been my favorite director. Great asset to any DVD collection.

For its time, it is still the best movie and still offers a lot. It has a great story and teaches children to accept things that are different. Still my favourite all time movie.

This was one of the first movies I saw in the theatre as a kid. I would watch it over and over. It's a classic movie with a great storyline. For the times the effects were pretty good.

I'm 46. I loved the movie when I first saw it and still love it with all my heart today. I feel deep sorrow at the sad bits and immense joy at the happy bits. As far as I am concerned it's one of the greatest movies of all time. The movie hasn't changed at all, (it's just as special as when it was first released), but people have changed and their ability be be moved by innosence, kindness and love. I've just finished watching the movie again for the umpteenth time, and I've just finished wiping my eyes. There are great humanitarian lessons to be learned from watching this. Thank you for bringing such joy to us all Mr. Spielberg.

Hasn't stood the test of time that well. My kids got a bit bored watching it, but I still enjoyed it. Little jokes like ET saying "home" when he saw a Yoda costume (repaid in recent Star Wars film where ET characters were in the Imperial Senate) made this fun for me. It's my era. I get it.

A movie is a good movie if it changes you and this movie definitely changed me. When I saw this movie for the first time I was only a child. Movies like these are important for people, especially children because it brings out their imagination and sense of adventure. I think Spielberg did an amazing job with this movie because it is so unique and it touched a lot of people. It was an outstanding and heartwarming movie."I'll be right here"!

Some movies stand the test of time, others are a test of time, E. T. would be both. The central themes of friendship and hope are universal and so it is easy to snag us, but it keeps us. Peter Coyote is amazing, then and now. As a parent I was very pleased to see Mr. Spielberg had become wise or poltically correct (take your pick) and exchanged the guns for walkie talkies. It's age shows, but hey, it's all still relevant and realistic. For all ages and all hearts. I'll be right here.

Dear God, why did they feel the need to re-release this drivel?! I hated it when I was twelve, and I hate it now. Doesn't Spielberg have enough money? At least he could make new garbage instead of recycling something not worth watching in the first place!

I probably saw this movie when I was young but I don't remember much about it. I watched it again in the theater yesterday and was truly touched. The friendship between the boy and E. T. was innocent and genuine. Well, maybe the spaceship was a little fake, but considering this is a movie made 20 years ago, I think the producers did a superb job. I thought Spielberg made a good decision as to change the policemen's guns into cell phones, with all the crimes and shootings nowadays. Watching this movie warmed my heart. A true classic. Also, those who can't appreciate this movie have to look a little deeper: maybe the technologies in making a movie will change, but the messages that this movie brings won't.

I think many of the reviewers here have forgotten something - the movie does is not "excellent" or "10/10" simply because it reminds you of your childhood. Yes, yes, childhood is a magical time that many people wish they could return to, and such cinema provides the ability for these folks who long for a distant past to "re-connect", but this does not make the movie a good one. Accept the fact that you will age and in time, die. Enjoy the moment and more appropriately for this venue, try and enjoy some recent films that connect you to your present. Now on to the actual review: OK movie, I liked it better when I saw it as a kid. Now it just feels old, even with the digital PC enhancements (e.g. why did the police officers' shot guns need to be replaced with cell phones for 2002? , etc.)

Saw it, loved it, bought the video and plan to go to see the 20th anniversary edition at the theatre. I read some of the other comments. Since when does love, kindness, friendship and understanding; laughter and tears belong only to the 80's. The message is forever for all to share and take a lesson from.

I saw it twenty years ago and loved it. I took my five year old daughter to see it yesterday and it just brought back so many memories. She laughed, cried, clapped her hands, and when it was thru she said "CAN WE COME BACK TOMORROW". It's a great family film.

Contrary to the opinions of some of the other reviewers, Im an adult and I loved this movie! Im 21 and I went with other adults, no kids. I dont even remember watching it as a kid so I didnt know for sure if I would like it but it was great! Its definitely worth seeing, even for adults. The story was very fast paced, so I was not bored at all during the movie, which I find is usually the case with kids movies. The young actors were also very good, and funny.

I don't understand how anyone cannot appreciate E. T. for the entertainment that it is. It is a sweet movie that I saw when I was 10 that will always be à part of my memories. Going to the drive-in with Mom, Dad and my brother and watching the bigger-than-life alien. My imagination ran wild, which is what a 10 year old's imagination is suppose to do; something so innocent. I'll take my daughter to see it and I would loce to have the video in my collection so my daughters can look back on it when they are my age. It is a must for any parent who saw it 20 years ago, especially now if they have children of their own.
