This movie follows around a grumpy, ignorant man who is put in awkward situations. This movie fails to deliver a moral message as I feel he never retains his dignity in the end. The humor relies heavily on awkward moments, which I can't stand. If Jack wasn't in this, it would be known as one of the most pointless movies ever. It's sad if people consider this movie a tribute to growing old. Boo.

Fantastic. Jack Nicholson in one of his best movies. At least in my opinion. I haven't seen this in a while, but I loved it. Went out and bought the DVD.

This movie was hilarious. I was cracking up while watching this especially when Kathy Bates was in the swimming pool with him and he himself was amazed to see her nude and quite embarassed. Jack Nicholson here was playing mother and father since his wife passed away and on his retirement he had since it was already arranged that his daughters wedding (Hope Davis) and He was not certain of himself to know what is going to happen in the near future how is he going to manage for himself and how to manage and find himself to be a complete failure until he saw and met this Tanzanian boy who he had been sponsoring and written over the years letters to this boy and had noticed that his life is not as bad as he thought.

Hey, I know this guy was my only reaction to this film. I've met him about twenty times in my life and sadly, there was only about one of the nineteen that I actually gleaned anything from him. I think he was a relative and a rubby and a retired kid chaser that wouldn't give candy out on Hallowe'en all wrapped into one. And the point of the movie is... oh, yeah, it's too close to reality to be entertaining.

I saw this movie twice in the theatre. The first time, I absolutely loved it and laughed so hard I cried at parts. I found it incredibly funny and sad... the second time it was okay for me. But overall, I would recommend it. Jack Nicolson is great in it!

A wonderful movie, but be warned you must enjoy dryness. Almost reminiscent of an English flick, dry, sad and yet wickedly funny.

This film was a real good comedy that put me and many other person feeling really good, especially with the kind of humour that was brought out that really shocked not only myself but many of the people in the audience. It brings out what happens in a family where one has difficulty like Jack Nicholson(Schmidt) has in this film. Having a wife that passed away he was finding himself in a hectic situation by not being about to handle his retirement life. It seems that no matter what happened everything seem to work the opposite. He was a very good dad to his daughter but he did not express to her his feeling towards her future husband who he was not too crazy over. He had met a nice woman Kate Bates but had a few shocking moments when it came to going to her swimming pool having to see that she was totally nude. This really gave alot of surprises to me and also to the audience but made this film to be well liked. I had found both Kate Bates and Jack Nicholson showed a great attention with the kind of sense of humour in this film that made it to be what it deserves.

This isn't half bad. And to see J. Nicholson in this different type of role is pretty refreshing. That man is a very good actor, even if ya don't like him. This movie is worth watching to see him in a totally different light. A bit slow, but Jack is always interesting to watch.

This was a remarkable geographical and philosophical journey of a recent retiree who tries to find himself and his role in society. He learns that even in his darkest moments of his life when he thinks he does not make a difference, he does. Schmidt demonstrates good fatherhood at his daughter's wedding (despite of not thinking her groom is an idiot) and touches the life of a child in a less developed country. The last scene of the movie where Schmidt reads the letter from the Sister Missionary put me in tears. Jack Nicholson's best performance!

I think the message of the movie seems too pesimistic. It is about how much our identity il related to profession. When you retire you meet yorself, without any mask that active life would normally provide. The movie is also about the kitsch that surrounds us, about how people can live with it, and how hard it is to mentain your identity and humanity in the middle of so much kitsch. While in another movie Michael Douglas walks into a store and fights against kitsch, Schmidt can only watch everything in a frustrating way.

About Schmidt is a funny movie that follows Warren Schmidt through his retirement, wife's death, and daughter's marriage. At time the movie can be cheesy, for instance a scene where Schmidt is sitting on top of his trailer and sees a shooting star. That scene is unforgiveable, but overall, About Schmidt is a funny movie with a really good performance by Jack Nicholson.

Very few movies are as powerful as this one, About Schmidt is one of the greatest films of the year if not of all time. From the fantastic book comes a masterpiece of modern days, a film of calliber we have not seen since to Kill a Mockingbird. About Schmidt seems like one man's inner monolouge, his struggles, his life, and his innermost thoughts. This very character driven story required only the best actor to pull of this extremelly challenging role, and Jack Nicholson who has provided us with such wonderful performances as One Flew Over the Cuccoo's Nest and the Shining delivers, in my opinion, the best performance yet. His powerful and emotional portrayl of Warren Schmidt is perfection, the scence at the very end in his home looking at the drawing is brilliant, the great single acting scene I have ever seen. Words cannot describe how moving and sad the whole film is, and in particular Nicholson's acting job. Kathy Bates however was alright, but is overshadowed by Nicholson. Every single part of this film is terrific, it's so harshly real. The story line is so familiar to many people I am sure, that it really brings a tear to your eye to watch this poor man struggle. There are also a lot of great comic relief bits that really add to the completeness of the film. Another flash of sheer brilliance from the writers is the use of Schmidt's writing to his foster child Ndugu as a way to express his inner thoughts and emotions. Do not miss this heart-ripper of a drama that will leave you completely blown away.

This was a wonderful movie! It was wonderfully directed and beautifully acted and shows that Mr. Nicholson and Ms. Bates are indeed Oscar caliber actors plying their craft. The story is simple. Warren Schmidt, played by JN, has just retired after 32 years as an acturial at Woodmen of the World Insurance Company in Omaha, Nebraska. He is apparently successful in his life, but is very unfulfilled and lonely, as is shown later in the film. He has all of the trappings of a successful man - nice house, nice car, a stable marriage, and a daughter. Now that he has retired, Schmidt must now face the man he has become. One of the film's ironies is that he is indeed a Woodman - a man of wood. He has never been able to express himself to his wife, daughter, or friends, but finds an outlet in little Ndugu, an African child who he has chosen to sponsor. He spills his guts to this 6 year-old child in long letters in which he tells the child all about himself. At last he has an outlet where he can express all of the anger, frustrations and lonliness that he has bottled up inside of himself. Schmidt goes on a journey of discovery after the sudden death of Helen, his wife of forty two years. He now feels that his mission is to save his estranged daughter, Jeannie, from marrying a waterbed salesman. On the trip to Denver from Omaha in his Winnebago Discoverer, Schmidt has time to contemplate his life and to forgive his wife Helen of an affair that she had years ago with his best friend. While in Denver to attend Jeannie's wedding, he has time to meet, dislike, and finally accept his new family. Kathy Bates gives an excellent portrayal of a most unpleasant divorcee, the mother of the groom. Near the end of the film, he at last sees that his daughter has found happiness, and he delivers a nice tribute to his new family at the reception. The end of the movie was touching. Warren Schmidt, who rarely shows any emotion during the entire film, even when his wife dies, starts crying when Ndugu sends him a simple drawing to thank him for the $22 monthly checks that Schmidt has sent him. This movie is slow-paced and is not for the moviegoer who expects to see a lot of action. Rather, this is a contemplative movie whose entire purpose is to develop the character of Schmidt and show how he handles the stark reality of facing himself for the first time in his life. Although it is darkly comedic, there is a serious message delivered by the film. Don't go through life as a wood man. Work is important, but a person's family can not be neglected during life..

Splendid performances by Jack and Kathy with full marks to the others in their supporting roles. Interesting to see America scenery in more subtle shades without huge glamour that we normally associate with that country. The film entertained without being extra special. Give it a try.

As much as JN is great, I found he overacted in some of the scenes. The fundamental question is about the worth of an individual's life - was it worth living, what did it contribute. Much of the movie was a comedy, but not a great one. Unfortunatly it did not do justice to the life question eiter. All in all, it was enjoyable but now I wonder about the book...

Who's Mr Schmidt? A sixty six years old man who's writing to a six years young boy in Tanzannia? A man who's driving on the sixty six road to Nebraska? A lonely man with everything except a true human life? A product of a way of life who wants to be the universal way of life? But at the end we finally discover Mr Schmidt is a true victim as all of us are if we don't see the movie beyond the dark funny drama... If this film doesn't make sens to you perhaps you lose something and not only about the movie... cut...

A different kind of movie but inspiring, thought provoking, and uplifting. It made me think about what's important in life, what are we doing. Where the heck are we headed. Jack was awesome, all the characters great and wildly beliveable. At times I turned to my wife and we smiled sorta wierdly at one another about the movie but it kept me very much involved and entertained. Excellent work.
