The contrast in lead characters was brilliant! The timeline felt real and there was enough well placed humour to keep it from being overwhelmingly dark!

I don't get it! This movie was very contrived... there are too many other great movies to see.

One of the most hard-hitting, compulsively watchable movies of the '90s is this complex story of crime and police corruption amid lavish life-styles in and around the Hollywood of the 1950s. Never read the James Ellroy novel but I understand it's even more complex and contains even more sub-plots than the film--so you have to admire the screenplay that manages to dovetail all the main details together in a way that leads to a smashing climax. Russell Crowe and Kevin Spacey do standout jobs in the leads--and Guy Pearce is riveting as the intensely ambitious man who eventually joins forces with Crowe to solve the crime. James Cromwell is chilling as the Chief of Detectives, as is Danny DeVito as a tabloid journalist. Kim Basinger is good as the Veronica Lake look-alike--but did she really deserve an Oscar for this? This kind of hard-hitting shoot-em-up melodrama is a throwback to the Cagney and Robinson crime epics of the '30s--but the gore is more graphic and the sadism more intense. Not one for the kiddies--but mature audiences should find this a knockout.

Fantastic film. It's been years since I saw it, but it surprised and satisfied me as a story. I'll rent it again.

It is kind of boring in the begining. But the whole journey has some thrilling experience. A brilliant show by Crowe. Thumbs up.

This Movie is poetry in motion. It is the first DVD I bought. Russel Crowe's acting in this film is captivating. Kevin Spacey is at his best. The movie is simply magical from start to finish.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] A puzzling crime has been committed -- The Nite Owl Massacres -- and detective Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce) , who believes the right way is the only way, is assigned to investigate the case. Ed's reluctant partner is flashy Sergeant Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) , a glamour cop, who rubs shoulders with Hollywood's elite, and uses muckraker Sid Hudgeons (Danny DeVito) as his source for any gossip that is "very, hush, hush". Vincennes believes that he has solved the bloody murders, but detective Bud White (Russell Crowe) discovers that there is a suspicious trail leading to some of L. A. 's leading citizens. Corruption and coverups are obvious daily occurences, and the cycle continues as the crimes mount. With lives at risk, it's only the eventual teaming of White and Exley that can ultimately put an end to the inexplicable violence. It's rare for a movie to stand out as one of best of all times and L. A. Confidential is one of those movies. Based on James Ellroy's best-selling novel by the same title, L. A. Confidential is an exceptional thriller, with an all-star cast. The film stars Guy Pearce as Officer Edmund Exley, a clean and honest cop; Russell Crowe as Officer Bud White, a tough and hot-tempered cop; Kevin Spacey as Jack Vincennes, a cop who loves being in the spotlight; and of course Kim Bassinger as Lynn Bracken, a mysterious and beautiful woman. Vincennes, Exley, and White all set out to uncover the truth behind a scandalous murder in an L. A. coffee shop. As the film advances, the suspense builds up and the tension rises. From beginning to end, the suspensful film is filled with surprising twists and turns, which holds all viewers intrigued. L. A. Confidential is a true masterpiece and defenitley one of the greatest films of all time. I really really enjoyed every passing minute of this film and will never forget it. This one goes down as one of my all time favorites. Bottom line: L. A. Confidential is a brilliant film with a memorable and explosive ending that'll have you saying "WHAT A MOVIE! " afterwards, forever. It's the 5th time I've seen it... so... trust me. Regards, Paul Stathakis PAUL'S EYE...
