If this movie were a high school play, written by teens, I would think it was lame. It's not - what does that make it? Pretty pathetic. One of the most pretentious movies I've seen in ages. The acting is okay (if a little stiff), but the story and dialogue are terrible... At the end they spell out the plot, and to be perfectly honest, my boyfriend and I STILL didn't get what they were trying to prove (not only that, we didn't really care) He's got a master's degree and I've got a bachelor's. So we're not stupid people, or out of touch - it was just a bad movie.

Over the top dialogue with layers and layers of subtext and even with my ninth viewing, more and more keeps surfacing. Some of the best pacing I have ever seen. Great performances and suberb cinematography. No aspect is forgotten... in fact, everything seems to have gotten special attention. More than a must see.

Good noir flick with the twist being it's takes place around a high school. Joseph Gordon-Leavitt does an excellent turn playing the hero who gets beat up a lot but keeps on going. Interesting cast, some nice directorial touches and nice to see Richard Roundtree, in a cameo, picking up a cheque. The choice of Lou Reed's "Sister Ray" over the closing credits was a nice touch. Worth a look.

I read reviews first and then went to see it and was a bit disappointed. It's ok if you have nothing else to do on a Sunday afternoon but go and see this. This movie kind of just "passed time". Plot was Good and I agree that it seemed very amature. I found it slow and the acting was not great. Overall it's a Good "passing time" movie but wouldn't have paid more that two bucks to see it.

The language is very cool and refreshing. The noir is played straight up, without pretense. The characters are engaged in their roles exactly the way high schoolers are: they play a role, but they live completely in it, without irony or calculation. There's no fibbing going on with these characters. So it's a hip, funny, honest noir film, that still feels like high school. Incredible!
