Probably this movie is one of the best to show truly how most newcomers to a foreign country feel when they first come here. Shows the transition to fit into a world totally unknown and yet balancing the life so that their root (from where they actually belong) is not forgotten by them or their future generation by maintaining their culture and tradition. I just love this movie as I could completely relate it to my own life, people like me who leave their country far behind and come here with lots of dreams and expectation and try to gradually adopt. It shows all the circumstances that we all somehow faced somewhere in our journey in a truly beautiful way with lots of emotions and I’m sure that not only people who are familiar with these situations but anybody will enjoy and love watching this movie.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] The movie started off slow, but gained momentum as it went on. The fight scene seemed was so graphic, it was like being there. As well, the love (sex) scene within seemed to verge on an X rating as many of the women within the theatre seemed aroused by Kal Penn's performance. (Guys, we could learn a thing or two watching this guy) With the movie ending in suspenseful standoff, I am curious to see what the outcome will be in the sequel. Viewer stay tuned!

From the director of "Salaam, Bombay", this is a moving and memorable film that captures the joys and heartbreaks of leaving your homeland to find a "better life" in another part of the world. Great performances by the parents, decent acting from the rest of the cast.

The movie was visually stunning, cultural and elaborate. But... Some acting was terrible, it went 2 hours too long, and the genre of "romantic comedy" has never been less funny. The most interesting part of the movie was planning what to do next weekend. It had charm, and as has been said great scenery, but it was just so boring it gets wasted. It lacks a direct storyline, instead chosing to beeline at snails pace through many scenes that should have ended in a scrap heap, the emotional moments were underused and generally pretty bogus. If you do not yet have a hip replacement avoid paying for this movie... Trust me, you won't like it.

Very nice movie, I think many people can relate to it... Makes you wonder about what is important in your life, family and traditions, or the modern way of life.

Really well done. Kal Penn does a fantastic job. We really liked this movie. Make up was done really well and you can see what a difference it is in the character being younger and older for each actor. All the actors did a great job.

Kal Penn was hilarious in Harold & Kumar but he was fantastic here... I saw this movie because I wanted to see how good he really is. And I was not disappointed!

The movie included many themes which can touch people of all ages but mainly those of Indian descent who are living in a culture different to the one they came from.

Very, very well done. Though I will concede it is not as heart-warming as Monsoon Wedding. The major pluses are performances by Tabu and Irrfan. Kal Penn is good too, but I was surprised I did not really feel for his character despite being in similar shoes to him most of my life. He seemed to be running away from his roots more than the traditional kid. Or maybe it is more of an American phenomenon due to the melting pot syndrome?

This movie was very well done. It is a beautifully subtle movie about the importance of knowing your roots, and respecting who you are. There are many touching moments, and some very beautiful cinematography as well! It's a nice departure from all the bombastic movies that are out there (but that are also just as enjoyable!)

This movie is for the indian people, that's all I've got to say =) It has all the jokes, (always making tea, saying A as in apple, g as in girafe when spelling something out on the telephone, the grandparents making sure the son marries a bengoli, everyone being called auntie) and more... I laughed so much when I went to go see this movie with my family. Tabu does a great job! Some parts do go very quickly, but you get used to it. Go see it as a family night... Me, my sis and mom loved it, my dad hated it. It really depends on you!

Excellent character development. Believable and understated. Beautiful to look at and good young main male character. Poetic story.

I was not aware this movie was in the theater. I was tired of watching the same American movies and I was looking forward to watch some Indian style movie. The movie is good and shows the reality of an Indian family moving to US. It unfolds in a way that culture differences/shocks are evident. Yes it is a long movie but there is a reason behind. You have to be patient. It is a touching movie and reveals the way Indians understand love and might give an insight why Indian marriage is more stable than ours. It is a movie about family, love and sacrifice. A great movie. I recommend it. You won't regret.

For those who are mature enough, this movie will be one of the best they have ever seen. It’s the best movie I’ve seen in many years. I regularly go to the theaters and I have the movie network at home, but despite that, I haven’t seen many such good movies in my life. If all you want is an entertaining story, or if you expect a flamboyant Bollywood movie, you’ll be disappointed. This movie is not a story-driven one where the characters only serve to tell the story, instead it’s a character-driven movie where the story serves to look at the personality of the characters through different experiences. This movie goes way beyond just telling a story, it appeals to your intellect and to your emotions. It makes you think about parent-children relations, culture, loneliness, death of loved ones, etc. I found it was a wonderful movie. I went to see it with my girlfriend and her brother, both of whom have different tastes from mine when it comes to movies, and we all came out extremely impressed by this movie. Until now, I think about that movie every day (I’ve seen it 5 days ago already) I’m planning to buy the DVD when it comes out, I want to see it again and again, and I want to show it to many people I know!

In some ways this is like the mouse that roared. Such a quiet, subdued movie with a huge impact. I was thinking about it still the next morning. The clash of cultures was treated with respect and humour. I loved it.

Stupid movie... The story was very confusing... And some of the scenes were not necessary... Don't watch it... Its waste of time and money... Some parts just went too far...

All you guys who rated it are crazy. The Namesake isnt the best movie and it doesnt suck. This movie is alright not the best but atleast worth seeing. It is long but all hindu movies are and it's not a bad movie. I wouldnt exactly reccommend it but if you have some time on your hands go see it. It is kinda boring but it's not the movie thats suppose to be exciting its more of a reality if a hindu family came to live in North America. I enjoyed it a little.

Mesmerizing, hypnotizing and in the end, very touching movie. You need to be patient; the story is very slow paced, but let yourself be engulfed by it, you will not regret it. To learn too live alone is Ashima's lesson in life, and for Gogle, it’s ultimately following a family quest…to freedom!
