This was a very welcome return to form for director Zhang Yimou, the fellow brought us the most gorgeous piece of propaganda in the history of Chinese film.'Riding Alone' is a very intimate story about a father looking for reconciliation with his estranged son. With this highly involving film, Zhang covers such subjects and themes as repression of emotion, lost opportunities, commonalities between different cultures, and familial bonds. As a bonus, the director treats us to the spectacular vistas of rural China. I would highly recommend this movie to people who appreciate Asian culture and enjoy stories about family ties.

Based off of my knowledge of Zhang Yimou (which is the massive total of one film, Hero), this is a step down. If I were Chinese, maybe I would appreciate the tedious dialogue, which about %35 percent of which is being polite."If you would be so kind..." "I beg you're forgiveness..." Except here revealed as, what must be, the laws of Mandarin poetics. This can be tedious at times, and I found myself forced to accept this as a simple cultural difference to continue watching the film (as in, I had to force myself to entertain the possibility of being entertained) But even after giving that much of myself to the film, I could not fully appreciate it (as entertainment or as film) Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles portrays exactly what the title entails: a certain solitude, and an emptiness reflected in the dialogue as well as the plot and production. If it was intended to be this way, then it has succeeded, however, that does not make this movie enjoyable. At least from a Westerner.

This will be a short review... Do not be afraid of letting your fellings show! Love should be revealed as it is, not by hiding our true feelings towards one another behind a mask, as alot of people tend to do!

There is a powerful message in this one. Be patient, let yourself slowly mend into the story, you will not regret it. The performance of Ken Takakura is Oscar material. Oh, by the way, bring tissue.

Excellent!

Beautiful cinematography, especially in the opening scene. Interesting characters and story. A bit slow paced at times but certainly worth watching.
