This is a great war movie, the opening is spectacular, every bit as good as Saving Private Ryan. Then it becomes a chess match between two snipers. Really well done, good rental.

The padlocks on the cattle cars? So the cowardly Russian 'herd' doesn't run away? Barred windows so they don't wriggle out? Oh yes, let's not forget the human wave attack with red flags. Naturally the vastly outnumbered and pinned down 62nd Army had no other use for all those men... so they just shot all the extras when they retreated. Of course, industrialized Russia never did solve that WW1 problem of getting enough rifles to the troops, did it? They must have been making too many balalaikas. Nevermind the fact that the political officer corps was abolished for the duration of the battle... Hollywood has bullshit cold-war cliches to reinforce. Long live McCarthyism! P. S. Let's also assezt the fact that Russian women are all whores... it's amazing that they won the battle at all... must have been all those Lend-Lease jeeps.

I hate computer-generated movies; IMHO they are on same level as "paint by numbers art"! The film was historically accurate and matched the book. The opening scenes - especially the abrupt change from traveling in a cattle car into the "killing fields" of Stalingrad was superb. Even the Volga crossing scene was OK, despite the computer made Stukas and the illusion that the barge is going from west to east. If I remeber right - the city proper was on the west side of Volga and the east side was in Russian hands during the battle itself. But that is uniportant. Knowing the story, from there is was just awful waste of good celluloid. I think Hollywood should stay away from historical themes if they do not want to make a real effort to portray the human part of the story. Or just make a puppet movie with all the technical wizbangs! Shindlers List was an exception, actually just opposite of this one - some of the views of burning Warszawa were pathetic!

Overwhelming! Despite the deviations from the true story, this film (mind: it is definitely not a "movie") makes you feel what war is like: It is people killing people, it is people being killed by people. It loses the dimension of an anonymous, monstrous beast. Contrary to most critics, I think without making it a love story it would not have been so impressive. As I am a teacher, I recommend this film to be watched by school classes. But it will take careful preparation. AW, Berlin, Germany.

Okay this movie was sweet and all with the love, (I think Rachel Weisz really portrays a sense of innocence in contrast with the theme) , although I think this takes away from the seriousness of the issue; war. (We have seen this with Pearl Harbor: false promises of an ethical truth and some historical elements are waned away on a frivolous love triangle.) I think that this whole love subplot may provide some rhetorical delight for most viewers, however, I find it distracting and makes too much light of fact. (Another thing: Is it just me, or do these Russian soldiers sound like they're from western Europe?)

Amazing war movie. I love WWII movies, and this one was right up there with Saving Private Ryan. Acting could have been a little better though. Ed Harris was great.

All films like this should be told to the letter. I understand that people wont bye the movie if it aint got that bit of love or lust in it. However how are we to change history. For example U571 portrayed to look like the americans got the enigma machine wrong. And the russian killed the german in that way in the film wrong he did not kill the german that way.

Well-done, good acting, and not Americanized like so many world war 2 movies. However, this movie has two problems: one is a sex scene inserted in the middle that seems more out of place than a bum on rodeo drive. The next is that this movie probably had more heads being blown off at close range by snipers than any other movie I've ever seen. It was dark and depressing but, on the whole, well-done.

Verry good. Altought another WWII story this one is different. It's not a grand scale movie like saving Ryan but I feel it's a better story. Disapointed a bit because I noticed this movie 11 weeks after it's release. I wonder if any publicity was made because this movie was a total surprise for me. If I would have known I would have been in theaters the verry first day.

Historically accurate and well crafted, it is a must see for the military buff out there. One must see it on a panormaic screen to get the full effect, but a visually stunning film all the same. Don't expect passive entertainment, you have to think in this movie to get the full effect.

I absolutely adored this movie! I should also mention that I hate war movies but THIS was an exception. This movie was the the first time I saw Jude Law's performance and I must say that I was impressed. I went to see this movie for the plot but I stayed and watched it for the love story and for Jude's eyes (WHOA!!!) I cannot wait for it to come out on tape (so I can watch it 1000 times a day! )

A very good movie. I have studied the battle of Stalingrad for many years and I think this is a very well recreated story (there are some doubts about the existence of Thornwald -the German "true" name and if the duel really went through). Zaitzev is a reality though. I really welcome this type of films. Current generations need to know about what happened in this that terrible holocaust which was WWII especially in the so-called Eastern Front. Two thumbs up!

Attention!!! To everyone who watched this movie!!! I just want to say that it is bad! I was born in Volgograd, former Stalingrad, and when I saw this movie I was very dissapointed... I heard that all the feedbacks from the actual veterans of this war about this movie are negative! Why? Because the way soviet soldiers are depicted is very very wrong... It is not true that the commanders were so violent to shoot so called "cowards" of their own, also the way the soldiers treated refugees in the movie is the way too violent... This movie is simply wrong, and that's the reason why the veterans demand this movie to be banned from video rental in Russia. We must realize that Stalin was bad, but the soviet army was not like that... Think of it for a second... For all of you I recommend to visit the city of Volgograd, former Stalingrad, and experience the real atmosphere of what was actually going on, and ignore the stereotype of this movie.

Not bad movie that could have been better. The love interest was not compelling and could have been left out completely. More interesting was the interaction between the two snipers. Ed Harris' german sniper was interesting as was the barren landscape. Movie left me with the impression that it was either cut or severely edited. Also not necessary was the preaching against communism. For a slightly better movie of this type, catch "Sniper", made about 10 years ago, with Tom Berenger as an aging sniper. That last one was more moving and tense than this year's bigger production.

This is a great movie! Lots of action and based on a real life duel between two snipers who hunt each other. Zaitsev's rifle is in the war museum in Stalingrad. Unfortunately the true story lost its romantic aspect before the ending unlike the movie. The scenes are very realistic, thanks to computers. There isn't much choice today because what's left of the WW2 equipment is safely locked up in museums. The cast is super. I really enjoyed learning more about the war on the Eastern Front.

Wonderful film about the war. The acting was quite good. Ed Harris, as usual, is always a marvel to see. The opening scenes were gut-wrenching. However, it was filmed very authentically as the Soviets were notorious for sacrificing their own in the name of the Motherland. Human life didn't count, but ideologies did. It sounds quite obscene to think that people were sent out in the middle of battle just to propagate communist rhetoric. I really don't think this was what Karl Marx had in mind. I don't understand the comments made that the characters didn't have time for romance during this battle, so the romantic rivalry wasn't realistic. On the contrary, it's during these times of atrocious horrors that people ache for and seek out a connection with others to maintain their hold on reality; the need for human comfort and warmth among the stench of brutality is overwhelming. Sometimes this need is as strong as the need to breathe. Trust me! I've seen enough destruction in the world and the crises that people go through to know. Overall: terrific movie.

This is really top-notch filmmaking! The direction was superb -- many of the shots were composed in a thoughtful Eisenstein-like fashion and the landscape (or should I say warscape) was the central element. The ruined factories and department store underscored the hideously surreal quality of lives lived in the midst of battle. Hoskins was uncannily perfect as Kruschev and Law was wonderfully understated as the naive country lad-turned-uneasy-war-hero. Hell, everyone was good, except I felt that Fiennes' acting was not up to his usual standard: he seemed a bit forced and not entirely comfortable in the role. I would pay full price to see it again.

I think I've seen all the major war movies that are out there. I don't really see them because I particularly like war movies, but someone I know always wants to go see them and I don't mind tagging along. There have been a few success stories in the past such as Saving Private Ryan and Platoon, and after having seen Enemy at the Gates, I think I'll have to add it to that list. In a movie about war, what seperates a good movie from a bad one is the storyline and script. If it looks and sounds like something you've already seen, you wasted your money going to see it. Enemy at the Gates displays a little similarity to Saving Private Ryan in some of the sharpshooter scenes, but has several other elements which make it stand out as unique from the others including an interesting love story and intense rivalry between the main actors. It's rare to find a war movie where an emphasis is placed on the importance of two men amongst millions. Perhaps it somewhat trivializes the reality of war, but nonetheless offers a good experience at the theatre for storytelling purposes. Enjoy...
