There's something intoxicating about a science fiction movie that successfully portrays a battle between the quest for never ending life. More so, I have never seen a film that so aptly shows parallel story lines as they occur. The bottom line is this movie is great due to it's special effects, emotionally charged storyline, and use of musical score to further push the plot of the film. I love this movie, it's one of Arronfsky's best.

I absolutely loved this movie. It was very abstact and artistic. Althought at the same time very confusing. I have seen it about 3 times and still dont understand it completely. Al in all if your looking for a very beautiful and romantic movie, then see it.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] After seeing this movie I came to the conclusion that I will never ever get that hour and a half of my life back... I did, however laughed my butt off when flowers grew out of his tummy... If it was an hour and half of flowers growing outta people... This movie would rock!

Watched if finally on dvd, had higher expectations but ended up very bored thoughout the movie and disappointed with the ending. Yes, visually very beautiful and admire the movie's intent/message, but nonetheless, it's delivery was too long & abstract at times, losing my gf's and my attention.

When this movie first came out... I was looking forward to seeing it because it seemed interesting. Once I finally got around to watching it... I was disappointed to say the least. Both Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman lacked direction. Both actors deserved a better film.

In the fountain the music was almost constant and really good, that add a bonus at emotion. Without the music the movie was not really good... You going to close the tv because the story was to complicate. Some time the music was entrancing with the movie and especially at the end. The music was all the time at the good moment. That why you don't think about it or just at one moment, that was at the end. Because that was really stiring... the music was in serenity with the moment and that my favorite part.

Definitely a little strange, visually breathtaking. But you keep expecting this movie to come up with a greater purpose, and it ends up being a little tedious and pretentious.

Good story idea-- switches from the normal to the weird and back again with little connection or a connection so deep I was missing it.

This film is absolutely beautifully and had the most visial appeal of any movie I've ever seen. The plot is intriquit and fascinating. The entire ideal of the movie and the concepts it presents are very original, and with every other movie having something that's been done before, this movie makes you think outside the box. There are VERY few movies that I thouroughly enjoy, and after the film ended, the only word that came to mind was "wow". I doubt that very many will understand the plot because it requires a very artistic and imaginative mind. If you want to see a movie that will make you think and will keep you talking then I wouldn't be wasting my time reading reviews, I would be franticly running towards the nearest screening. The film was absolutely captivating, I saw it close to a week ago, and it's still all I can think about. I would not recommend this movie to anyone simple-minded or to anyone who doesn't give gratitude for creativity and artistic visuals. Definitely the most impressing movie I have ever seen.

It started of with SO much promise, then all of a sudden you realize that the girl is going to die and you get really really sad. Then theres a glimmer of hope!. Then it keeps going on that extremely high emotional level for the rest of the film so I kinda got bored and stopped having any other emotion. You can only be on THAT high an emotional plain for so long before your energy and care is sapped. Some of the ideas and shots are kinda neat. The whole thing in the snow globe with the tree was a little bit unnecessary and distracting from the rest of the plot. Not worth seeing. Its too long (hour and a half, I know) it doesn't go anywhere, and after a while you just stop caring.

While I enjoyed the film, I think the Fountain was too much ambition and too many parallel story lines for 1 hour and 36 minutes. The movie felt like it could have been more tightly edited and executed, and the characters needed more backstory. Despite this, the beautiful organic space visuals (many of which were micro-filmed in a petri dish) were a nice change from cold CGI, and the topics examined in the movie are of importance to all mankind. In particular, the film seriously examines how we deal with death. In my opinion, you'll feel more comfortable with mortality after seeing this film. I recommend you follow up this movie with a viewing of Pi, the first feature movie by director Darren Aronofsky. Give that one a try if you are interested in a faster pace and less confusion, yet equally interesting far-reaching philosophical ideas of a different nature.

Thats a very good movie. Anybody that likes to think "out of the box" will adore this movie. I dare to say that it's a new genre of movies I havenever seen anything like this, it touched me and I thought about it the whole night... and still I dont understand few things clearly. People who say that this movie is meanenless are obviously brainwashed by some soaps... so if u like to think, if u know that you won't leave the theatre for a sec just to go pee:WATCH THE FOUNTAIN!

An exercise in cliche. Why does the male actor have to throw things around and yell so much to convey his frustration? The "future" does not serve any meaningful purpose. It reminds me of Chen Kaige's "Promise." Only this one is shot more poorly. The script is uninspiring. The acting could have redeemed the movie if only the script had been better. If the moviemaker had something to say, he said it in a very unconvincing manner. In sum, a disappointment.

Never a fan of sci-fi or fantasy, but I did thoroughly enjoy this film. Except the ending, which is a little bit too long & dragging-on to my taste... I think the last... maybe 10-15 minutes or so could be cut altogether, which would give even a better ending than what it is right now. Brilliant performances by the whole cast.

The movie was touching, moving, deep. There is three stories you have to keep track of but at the end they merge to bring you a sweet ending. I don't understand why people don't get this movie... It does use a lot of metaphors but it wouldn't be interesting if they told you the theme right away that's what draws the audience. If you haven't seen it what are you waiting for? GO SEE IT you won't regret it. I believe it brings more meaning to our lives...

Not the kind of movie you would want to pay, to watch. Even despite having been a lover of arthouse cinema, I still felt bored out of my wits and felt that it was simply a waste of time. It is incredibly hard for any director to play along 3 plotlines at once. And if they happen to do so, they'd rather be very careful to integrate the plots together. Not much room for character development. In my opinion, it perhaps would have been a much more touching story if it focussed on human relationships & human emotions alone. Chopping out the sci-fi jargon.

I love and respect Aronofsky's work, but I try not to set expectations based on previous movies and allow the director to do something different and maybe even surprise me. The film is not bad. It is certainly beautiful and leaves one pondering many parts of it. Somehow, sadly, it just doesn't connect as it could. Many great ideas, many ambitious concepts. Maybe too many for the scope of this movie. The cast is superb, though, and I have new found respect for Hugh Jackman. Overall, for fans of more philosophical stories, this movie is worth seeing - I don't think you'll have a chance to appreciate it's beauty as much if you only rent the DVD. On the other hand, don't expect greatness. It doesn't reach that far.

For those afraid of going see a movie and actually having to think... forget about it. This film will anger you like no other. For those of you who appreciate originality, art and above all emotional pieces of work, where the creators immerse themselves wholly into it... you will love this film. Contrary to many comments posted, this film DOES have a very tightly knit plot... it just requires the viewer to actually pay attention while watching the movie, instead of just sitting back and expecting to be spoon fed answers wrapped in an easily digestible chocolate coating. If you are actually aware of Darren Aronofsky's work, then this film should not come as a surprise to you... but if you are not, and just want to see Hugh Jackman (who is stellar in the film) be Wolverine... then maybe you should go see another film. Either way, throughout history, art which defies convention and pushes the envelope has never been easily embraced... it has either been vehemently hated, or unquestionably loved... all for it's purity. This film is no exception. All I have to say is that ANYTHING which arouses such emotion in people, whether positive or negative, has to have something undeniably special about it. A must see for independant/free thinkers... a definite no for sheep.

Past. Present. Future. I kept hoping that the "future" was all just a dream only... The whole symbolism that he's in a "bubble world" and is freed from constraints of his created world when he sets free out of the bubble put me into fits of "eyes rolling". Not enough character development because of the three stories. Movie left me unsatisfied.

I must admit I disliked this movie on many different levels. To begin with, they sold the movie as something it was not (watch the trailer, and then watch the movie and you will see what I mean) You then spend an hour and half sitting through this nonsense thinking there's going to be some redeeming breakthrough or revelation that will make the whole mind numbing experience worthwhile, but it never arrives. Then you leave the theatre wishing you had left after the first 30 minutes. No doubt there are many who will say I just 'didn't get it'. The truth is that there really isn't much to get. I have yet to read any analysis or criticism that points to the contrary. Yeah okay, so it loosely revolves around the theme of love and death (in a trite and disjointed way).. big deal. The bottom line is that this is a movie 'trying' to be deep like 2001 or Solaris and somehow gets lost in its own depths. It will disappoint fans of the above titles, as well as fans of Aronofsky's earlier works like Pi..

First of all this is not a science-fiction film, it's closer to a art house flick with a-list stars and expensive special effects. The film tries too much to be artsy and looses itself in the movement between the parallel stories especially since this is not well executed. In the end it is a waste of time and money! Horrible...

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Three plots running side by side in the same movie. 1st. The doctor trying to find a cure for his wife's cancer. 2nd. The wife's book called The Fountain is played out. 3rd. The doctor's daydreams of flying through space toward a star trying to save the Tree of Life. All three are about mankinds age-old struggle to find a way to extend life while preventing pain and suffering. The wife learns not to fear death and be happy with herself before she dies. Not really a very deep story like everyone is saying. I would not really like to see it again.

First time I've posted a review on here, and the first time in... (? ) that I've been set on seeing a movie again before it leaves the theatres. It's unfortunate, but not surprising, that this movies has such limited appeal. But it's not at all arthouse schlock intended to befuddle with nonsense and/or obfuscate with trite symbolism. If you follow it through, it's very tight, and very coherent, deeply moving, and masterfully done. Find out what you can about it, and if you think it might interest you, then GO. There will be very few times in my life that I get to see a movie that hits me like this one does.

If I had not read up on the movie before, I would not have understood what was going on from the beginning and would have missed much of it. It is beautifully done, though, and what I was left with was a strong emotion. Certainly works not on a reasoned level, but more on an emotional level, and challenges linear thinking. It appleas to a certain, more transcendental, philosophy. Definitely not for everyone, and depends on your mood when you see it, but you have to be prepared to detach yourself from conventional thinking to truly enjoy its depth.

A very subtle film that was challenging mentally, stunning visually, and touching emotionally. This is not a movie for those with weakened abilities in concentration. It doesn't spell everything out for you, so if you are wanting hollywood dreck, then avoid this. I think that this movie was short of fantastic, however, do to the directors choice in a selct few visuals, which were strange to the eye and inconsistant with the theme. But that did not take away from the emotional content of this finely crafted film.

I read the critics from the other viewers before going to see this movie. So I was sort of warned that I'd hate it or love it at the end. I did not love it or hate it, I was rather feeling in between. Nevertheless, I found the image beautiful, stroy is interesting in a sense, good actors, and indeed, this is very different from other Blockbusters movies, it's special, more like a piece of art. We all wonder what it meant, and this makes you talk about it alot afterwards.
