The various problems affecting the different tenants of the Yacoubian Building are in fact some of Egypt's many problems:(poverty, injustice, fundamentalism, repression of gays, corruption etc) Through each character we are exposed to a different issue. A very interesting film, because of the issues tackled and the handling of various taboo subjects. The only weakness I found was perhaps too many issues were being shown, hence the length of the film (over 2 & 1/2 hrs) A great accomplishment for first-time director Marwan Hamed.

With a crew of the best egyptian actors, it was very disapointing! Maybe because the budget and the expectations were high! There's couple shocking scenes never shown before in any egyptian movie, beside that the 3 long hours could be done in 1 quality hour.

A very interesting film, looking at contemporary Egypt and its links with its past. Sort of a soap opera, but a very accomplished one, with the characters demonstrating how such touchy topics as Islamic militancy, corruption and homosexuality fit into today's Egypt. Despite the length, my interest didn't flag.

This movie gives the viewer a great insight to what it must have been like in Cairo many years ago. The building itself is somewhat crumbling but architecurally very appealing. The characters are fantastic (in more ways than one)
