Rod Lurie's films are always about power, its abuse, whether its from the system or an individual. In Nothing But the Truth Kate Beckinsale plays a journalist who uncovers a CIA agent in an article. When she refuses to reveal her source, she is put in jail. Based on the true story of New York Times journalist Judith Miller, Lurie takes liberties. He used that story to explore his favorite theme once again, and make it his own. The final product is a film about integrity and principles. Unfortunately it never got a wide release and it is very little known. The writing is sharp and the directing serves the story. Its beautifully acted, Beckinsale is powerful and the supporting cast is just as good. Nothing But the Truth also reminds me that Alan Alda isnt in enough movies, he is quite amazing here. Matt Dillon is strong as usual and David Schwimmer is better at drama than I have ever seen him in this very good political thriller.
