Oh my. All I could think of when I watched this film was this must be what would happen if you ran into the entire BUSH family while on a vacation in remote part of the hills.

I think it was a graphic description of everyday life in the Southeastern United States. It clearly reflected the intelligence and eccentricity of most in the deep south. To most southerners this movie was to them what a movie about going to work would be to the rest of the country, just another day in the life. I applaud the writer/director/producer for giving us a glimpse of what is the norm there.

This is the film responsible for making city folk afraid of going into small southern towns. It is a film that is as horrifying as it is disturbing. A terrifying saga of nature and people victimizing other people. Although somewhat similar in conceptual thinking as Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", this film ventures into deeper and more sinister waters. Even though the film is three decades old, it will still make many viewers' pulse rates climb; it is definitely not a film for the faint of heart.
