When Melissa Brooks (Evangelista) discovers she can't afford college she moves to New York City and gets a job as a waitress at a comedy club. She squeezes her way into a downtown, one-bedroom occupied by her eccentric, older brother Robbie (Ivan Sandomire) and his boyfriend Miller (Kane Manera). Over the coming days and weeks, Melissa tries to raise the nerve to get on stage while she hones her act and waits tables, watching and learning from other professional comics.

Soon, Melissa finds herself testing her talent and her material in front of the toughest crowds in the country. To make the Summer complete, she becomes involved in a complicated love triangle (between Vincent Piazza and Michael Mosley) while finally dealing with the dark secrets from her past.
