[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
There are times one can leave a cinema wondering about certain aspects of a film, even important areas. In many instances this can be a positive; not so for me in The Reader. (From here onward I would not read this review until after you see the movie - unless you do not plan to see it) Hannah, the cental character, had a Nazi past. It seems she was more troubled that she was illiterate then the fact she did nothing to help prisoners locked in a burning building causing all but 1 to perish. To her credit Hannah admitted her complicity. All her fellow guards did not. They then blamed Hannah for writing the report that would condem the author of it. As an illiterate, Hannah obviosly could not have written that report. Her lover knew this. He was a law student attending her trial. He does reveal to his professor that he has evidence that an injustice is occuring with the trial. Neither he nor his Professor do anything. This is most disturbing as the reasons are never made clear. One can imagine why Hannah did this but I have no idea why her lover or his Professor did nothing. This is especially disturbing because Hannah's fellow guards come off as pure evil.
