Thought it was very brilliant and CHALLENGE anyone to tell me who was going to Do-it (murder the girl)? Love to hear your theories...

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] "The Pledge" is adapted from the Swiss playwright Durrenmatt drama, a great Existentialist artist, concerned with the most passionate issues affecting the hearts of people in these times. Jack Nicholson's character Jerry Black really cares, and is even more tormented by the plight of children than the actual parents. He assumes full responsibility for their protection. His instinct leads him to discovery of the real murderer, not the framed up American Indian youth who is also a victim. But he is completely isolated, believed by nobody, and the climax proves him right even though he loses his rational mind from suffering, alone in his love for children, the helpless and meek. Nicholson's acting is unbearably intense and powerful.

I to disagree with many of the comments on this page! I just watched this film last night. The point of the character & movie is to keep you guessing to whether or not Jerry's character is just a "junkie" and can't retire or get over the long history of his career or is he a detective who knows his stuff, though not flashy, rather an ordinary man who is a slice of life. Addiitionally, many junkies are disturbed & haunted! That is why they became a junkie! Many people also find movies & life "slow & boring" when it is simply reality. Not everything in life is exciting drama & going "Mach 5 with with hair on fire! " It is life... sometimes slow but still interesting & can provide much insight if one takes the time to critically think for a while. Additionally, life can be unexpected & depressing! Not everything ends with a happy ending. Hollywood just tries to convince us otherwise. There are many cases in life that occur just like this! If you did not see the point to this movie, you were not critically thinking enough! It is a movie which questions life! It questions, "Does EVERYTHING in life happen for a reason & a purpose?! " It is tragic these girls died! What purpose does it provide? It is tragic that there would be some cocky cop... but they exist & is there a purpose? It is tragic that they do not connect the crash accident with the suspect, Jerry's relationship falls apart & he personally falls apart... again life, but is there a purpose? YES! Perhaps things happened as they should have!!! Meaning, the killer was stopped was he not! Had Jerry not continued this man may have killed this girl, just on a different day etc. He may have killed another girl than this one & continued to kill. It is tragic that Jerry character falls apart & a good relationship does not continue & a cocky cop gets to continue life, but perhaps there is a reason & purpose. And perhaps the cokcy cop will solve 1 crime later & that is needed... similarily for the woman/girl's life. Again, think more critically, don't expect things to just be flashy & always a happy ending etc! You will miss out on so much if you continue to view movies this way! Much of life is not "Hollywood special effects & happy endings" and it is reality & will provide you with much valuable insight for your own life!

This godawful film unfortunately grasps at trite old school scenarios and executes badly. The performances are even worse. Nicholson looks like an old junkie rather than a disturbed and haunted character and Robin Wright Penn is just grating.

I don't think this was a bad movie, however it was slow and boring at times and the ending is trully unexpected, but depressing.

Make a pledge to NEVER EVER go see this moving. It was definitely the most boring, pointless movie I have ever seen. It was painful to watch not because it moved you, but because you wanted it to end so badly. Avoid at all costs.

This may be the worst movie I've ever seen, along with The Ninth Gate. I lost a lot of respect for every actor that appeared in this movie... This movie should be shown as torture. I still don't know what the end was all about! I wish there was a 0 to give this movie but as it is, I can only give a 1, which gives the movie way too much credit!

One of the worst movies I've seen *ever* and I'm not kidding at all. Someone here said "starts good but ends with nothing"... Well that's the title of this movie. I will not watch this movie again if they pay ME to watch it.

Heck, I still haven't figured out WhoDunIt, after extensive going back and forth with the video. But I did find the direction, set design excellent. I thought the editing sucked.

Nicholson is very convincing but the people around him are not. This movie is too much slow and predictable, starts right but ends with nothing.

I can't believe the ratings this movie is getting! I really enjoyed this movie and wondered why it didn't get the publicity it deserved. An amazing performance by Jack Nicolson.

Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn directed, how can you expect anything other than off beat with this mix. Slow paced, tighter editing would of helped but then again isn't true life like that in the given situation of this disturbing subject matter. I loved the movie, suduced by it's characters and realism. And left the movie haunted by the message implied from an unexpected ending.

Awful! Boring! Slow! I would rather shave my head and stick it into a cauldron of hot lava rather than watch this film again.
