A stunner. Meryl Streep deserves the Oscar for her performance as a vicious, repressed manipulator whose personal vendetta against Philip Seymour Hoffman crosses the line from theology to paranoid delusion fueled by borderline rage. Hoffman, too, is a complex, nuanced character with a shade of shadow that undermines him. Amy Adams plays the innocent spoiler who will flow into her own with Vatican II. Not an easy film to watch that speaks to the corruption of grace in institutionalized religious heirarchies and the doubt that enfolds the spark of faith.
