I like the way the director portrayed life in the movie. It might be a bit slow, but it somehow had quality especially with the background music. I enjoyed seeing Maggie in her cheongsam! Elegant!

Very subtle movie. If you don't play very close attention, the meaning will be lost and you will find it boring. The cinematography is wonderful and the soundtrack is scumptious and lush. I love the alternate perceptions and the attention to small details, just what happens when people fall in love...

I think this is a fine movie. It takes the time to let us contemplate what is happening to the two main characters. While some of shots were visually disturbing (e.g. mono-color), in general they contributed to the film. I especially liked the repeated scenes, where we are not told whether these are sequential, alternative perceptions, alternative realities or what. I did not really understand what was being "said" in the last part of the movie, but I am reserving judgment on whether that is my problem or the film's. In many ways this movie is like Chocolat, which also has a measured pace and is about life vs. restriction, a love between two people older than Romeo and Juliet, and Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. The music was an important part of the film. It presented a contrast between edged tango music and sweet Spanish (!) songs sung by Nat King Cole. Were the Spanish songs chosen because tango comes from a Spanish-speaking country? I don't know. (I saw a dubbed version. In Germany almost all foreign films are dubbed.).

This movie is a master piece. It's a great subtitled movie, even for teenagers. The story is touching and the music is great. It seemed to be non-sense to some people because the translating is not so great. Good over-all.

A must see!! What an amazing film. The lighting, the camera angles, the mood, the music, the costumes all combine to create a spectacular film. Without actually saying anything, at times, the characters convey their true feelings for one another. Spectacular.

It's amazing. Following the slow motion and the music, it's like swimming in the mood of love sea.

Once again Wong Kar-Wai turns a relatively simple plot into a cinematic masterpiece. He masters the art of demonstrating through wonderful camerawork, the subtil and powerful emotions of forbiden love. A must see!

Absolutely enchanting. Like love, the film is full of subleties, respect, reservations and deep desires. It is not a film for those who believe love is simple and that the phrase "you complete me" captures love at its eternal depths. The film relies completely on subtle moods and forbidden emotions. At times it is heart-breaking, but that is what is amazing about it. I LOVED THIS FILM

As beautiful as the music might be, the movie is boring. Really boring. I think the English title should be "In the Mood for Sleep". And when they do everything twice, it's mainly with the purpose of boring the viewer to sleep. If you're "In the Mood for Love", stay home.

I understand some people may find this movie slow and boring. However, to me, it is full of savouring details that can be easily missed on the surface. That is one of the essence of the movie--the undercurrent. Remember, the story happened in Hong Kong, in the 60s. Their love was bound to be restricted -- by the "closeness" of neighbours, by the morality, by the custom of the community. People did talk, and just like situations in Wharton's novels, it would be better (and much more appropriate) to save face than to follow one's emotions. Nonetheless, this didn't lessen their emotions -- what was NOT said and done would be more powerful and suggestive than mere words and actions (as Hollywood has so consistently, and insistently, showed us). The other interesting feature of this movie is the contrasts. Almost everything was done twice. Leung and Cheung often repeated each other's dialogs and were put in similar situations. Their reactions, expressions and their ways of handling the situations could be very different. Sometimes, these constracts may be typical portrays of male/female traits; sometimes, an interesting study of the characters of the two people in this "relationship" as indivduals. Further, the director played a trick on us when the two central character "rehearse" on potential confrontations--and those were "played" twice as well. I personally think this movie is better than "Crouching Tiger... " but I understand for those who didn't grow up with flying people on TV, "Crouching Tiger... " may be more attractive than "In the moode of Love". Incidentally, that's not the real title of the movie. Instead, it should be "Flower-like Years".

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
This is my kind of movie where the filmmaker chooses to avoid showing us the obvious (the cheating couple) and focuses on the non-obvious (the desire that develops slowly between the two victims of the affair) I always said that a good movie isn't defined by what you see but by what is implied. This movie is about caracters not events, it's about emotions not actions. This is the kind movie you rarely see these days if this movie would have been made in Hollywood you would have got love scenes involving the two cheaters and a happy ending. Instead you get a reflection on life and the decisions we make sometimes for all the wrong reasons (in this case the 2 victims are afraid to admit their love and give themselves totally to one another because they are afraid they are gonna be judged). I won't go more in details but I will finish by saying this is one my ten best films of the year without a doubt.

A "must-see" if you're into love stories and/or Hong Kong movies. Wong Kar Wai did an excellent job in bringing the daily life of Hong Kong in the 60's onto the movie screen. Maggie Cheung & Tony Leung really do deserve the "Most beautiful couple" title during the Toronto Film Festival. Personally I would have picked this one over "crouching tiger" for Oscar if it had come out last year instead.

The movie was very slow and kinda boring. The girl has a nice tirma, but after 1/2 an hour even that got boring to look at. On second thought, I think I saw the wrong movie, I though it was supposed to be about lesbians...

Howsoever stylistic and beautiful this movie is to look at, I found the ending to be disjointed, disappointing and unsatisfying. The characters were stereotypically inscrutable, and consequently did not earn or capture my full interest and sympathies. The romantical tension, with its tantric pacing, was not at all palpable, and even the Taster's Choice commercials serial romance campaign of a few years ago had more appeal! I was grateful I at least saw this movie on a movie premiere contest pass win!

It is the worst and most boringest movie I have ever watched. I seen it in Hong Kong, but I don't think is worth it to come on in Ontario!

I saw this film in its original Chinese version. I know that In the mood for love has won a lot of awards, but I found it over-rated. The story line is interesting and very touching, and the scenes were all very beautiful and artistic. The only problem I had with this movie was that I found it progressed too slowly and in a way the director was trying a little too hard. So basically, the story is pretty original, but it was just too slow for my taste. I was also disappointed with how the whole thing ended.
