The film interweaves a modern-day search for self with a haunting love story about a rebellious outcast (Kirsten Dunst) and the son of a British Admiral (Trent Ford). An embittered old woman (Lynn Redgrave) recounts the story of a book she has written to a grieving violinist (Julia Brendler), whose mother (Alberta Watson) has brought her to the fishing village she grew up in to recover from the death of her boyfriend.
