There are few redeeming qualities to this film but I will list the ones I see: It succeeds in appearing very 'real' which means the script and acting were very good. You may as well have had a camera in any public school classroom. That's about where the good ends. The plot was about as exciting as real life too and nothing much happens in the movie. Those who have little to no experience inside the school systems may find it eye-opening to consider how teachers deal with the times but if you have worked in a high school or know a teacher, there's probably nothing out of the ordinary here which begs the question of why make this movie at all? There's no apparent message, just 2 hours of events which closely resemble high school life. When I watch a movie I expect to get away from real life thank you and I intentionally stay away from teenagers because they don't make sense. I did not enjoy this rental! Too boring.

The acting and verité start the piece out with promise. But then it never goes anywhere -- it's all first act. We learn little about the characters, and they don't develop. We kept waiting for something to happen, but nothing really did. Of all the ways to show that life at this school is insufferable, making a movie to suffer through is not the way to go.

Brilliant... if anything a masterful character study, but beyond that a subtle conversation about every topic under the sun... see it if you like movies with brains.

Excellent movie. Not very different from what I experience in my school : lack of interest, insolence. Yet many kids are good kids.

Depressing & too long. No plot other than illustrating how bad schools have become.

Excellent movie! Addresses issues of language, race, culture, and the treatment of stigmatized groups in a very interesting and intelligent way.

If Cantet had any consideration for the public's intelligence, this movie would have lasted 30 minutes (60 min tops) Maybe Cannes gave it an award for socio-political reasons (who knows? ) but the movie itself does not present anything new (nor moving, for that matter) for teachers and students alike.

An excellent flick, brilliantly cast and providing a compassionate and insightful look at the tough job of teaching and learning in a multicultural society. Funny at times and always fair and nuanced with real characters rather than cardboard villains and angels. A must see for anyone who likes kids, teaching and good films.

A remarkable achievement in cinéma vérité. Best cast of the year, by far.

The movie indeed differs from a traditional Hollywood-like movies on the topic of high-school education. It almost looks like there was no script written for it. Made me feel like I am right there in the class, observer of a reality show happening in the classroom. The actors are so natural, almost as they are not acting. I really appreciate that the movie was spared of emotionally enforced scenes that need to touch the audience as the director expects. Instead, it is touching as much you are susceptible for it. If you are into this kind of documentary-drama type of movies you will not notice 2 hours duration and would wish for more. At least I did.

Good... unsettling. Makes one want to fix schools, sympathize -empathize with teachers, students, administration and parents... does not inspire one to become a teacher... sad...

As a former teacher, I can say that this movie is dead on. I have seen worse in the classroom. The apathy is ever present. It was funny to hear people say as they were leaving, that they would never want that job. If you want to see what teaching is like, this is an excellent movie.

Good movie, documentary-like, great moments, student actors were wonderful, made me appreciate teachers +++ more than I already did, which was a lot; but this movie was very long and really needed editing.

Excellent directing and acting. Seems so real and subtle as you were in the classroom yourself. Very good and interesting reflection of our society, well worth to compare with ones own school days. Especially interesting to watch when you are working with students yourself. Only downside to the film: a wee bit too long.

Had to give it a zero so the average review would be more like the 5 that it deserves. This was little more that a camera man following the condition of a school in France. There was nothing imaginative, nothing moving or thought provoking - most people will be responding their ignorance. Their shock and surprise at seeing what school has really become in some parts of the world.
